The A&R is responsible for the identification, acquisition, and development of music content and talent for TuneAfrique’s catalog, with an emphasis on maximizing market potential, streaming performance, and platform visibility.
The role requires a deep understanding of local and diaspora music markets, DSP mechanics, creative development, and metadata integrity, all within the framework of scalable digital distribution.
Job Description
Talent Acquisition & Onboarding:
Proactively source and sign emerging and commercially viable artists, producers, and podcasters.
Assess content readiness and market fit using qualitative review and quantitative signals (e.g. engagement metrics, virality indices, playlist placements)
Collaborate with the content delivery manager for onboarding processes, ensuring accurate metadata submission (ISRC, UPC, credits), rights clearance, and catalog ingestion.
Content Development & Oversight:
Guide artists through onboarding project planning
Collaborate with audio-visual teams to produce supporting content assets (reels, lyric videos, BTS footage).
Release Strategy & Coordination:
Collaborate with the Content delivery manager, marketing, and the multimedia team to align content drops with market timing and promotional windows.
Advise on release cycles and DSP pitching timelines.
Review release schedules with the COO using project management tools, internal CRMs, and analytics dashboards.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
Monitor DSP analytics (Spotify for Artists, Apple Music for Artists, Boomplay, YouTube Studio, etc.) to assess content performance post-release and report to the COO
Generate periodic reports on signed artists’ performance: stream volume, listener growth, playlisting, territory insights, etc. and submit to the COO.
Evaluate catalog health and recommend strategies for audience development or back-catalog reactivation.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Coordinate with Legal on contracts, licensing, publishing rights, and intellectual property issues.
Interface with Finance on artist royalty structures, revenue splits, and backend payouts.
Work with Content Delivery Manager/Tech team to flag technical issues affecting content delivery, DSP syncing, or metadata integrity.
Market & Genre Research:
Track sonic trends, cultural shifts, and sub-genre evolutions (Afrobeats, Street Pop, Alte, Amapiano, Afro-house, Gospel).
Maintain competitor analysis of local A&R signings, major label activities, and independent market movements.
Contribute insights to quarterly strategy sessions and internal market reviews.
Requirements & Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field preferred (but not required with strong relevant experience)
2 – 5+ years of experience in A&R, artist management, music marketing, or digital distribution.
Familiarity with music rights, distribution models, and release strategies
Strong knowledge of the digital music ecosystem (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, TikTok, etc.).
Proven track record of identifying and developing emerging talent across multiple genres.
Deep understanding of African and diaspora music cultures.
Strong network within the local creative ecosystem (artists, studios, producers, etc.)
Proficiency with digital tools used in distribution (e.g., CMS platforms, metadata entry systems).
Analytical mindset with a creative ear
Excellent verbal and written communication; able to brief creative, legal, and technical teams clearly.
