We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Music Tutor

Location: Gwarinpa, Abuja (FCT) 
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • The Music Tutor at Discovering Talents Academy (DTA) is responsible for delivering engaging and effective music instruction to primary school pupils, specializing in various instruments (Violin, Keyboard, Guitar, Saxophone) and vocal training.
  • This role involves fostering musicality, creativity, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
  • The Music Tutor plays a crucial part in upholding DTA's mission to "create an atmosphere of fun where kids can enjoy being kids" and its vision to "discover and bring out the uniqueness in every child," by ensuring individualized teaching and promoting artistic expression within the SHRID niche, particularly focusing on Skill Acquisitionin music.

Responsibilities
Instructional Delivery & Curriculum Implementation:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, engaging music lessons for individual students or small groups, covering instruments such as Violin, Keyboard, Guitar, Saxophone, and Vocal training.
  • Implement DTA's SHRID niche, particularly focusing on:
    • Driving Skill Acquisitionin musical performance, theory, and appreciation.
    • Applying Individualized Teachingstrategies to cater to diverse learning styles, skill levels, and musical interests.
    • Promoting clear Dictionand vocal clarity in singing and musical communication.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods, musical exercises, and repertoire to make music accessible, enjoyable, and challenging for all pupils.
  • Set clear learning objectives for each lesson and provide constructive feedback to students to support their musical progress.
  • Prepare pupils for internal performances, school events, and external music examinations or competitions as appropriate.

Assessment & Reporting:

  • Design and administer appropriate assessments to evaluate student understanding of musical concepts, technical proficiency on instruments, and vocal performance.
  • Analyze assessment data to identify learning gaps, inform instructional adjustments, and provide targeted support to students.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, musical progress, and performance grades.
  • Prepare comprehensive progress reports for parents, highlighting musical achievements and areas for development.

Classroom / Studio Management & Environment:

  • Create a positive, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment conducive to musical exploration and practice.
  • Implement effective management strategies to ensure an orderly and respectful learning atmosphere during lessons.
  • Encourage active participation, creative expression, and a love for music among students.
  • Ensure musical instruments and equipment are properly cared for, maintained, and organized.

Student Welfare & Support:

  • Monitor the academic and social-emotional well-being of students, identifying and addressing any concerns promptly.
  • Provide individualized support and encouragement for students who require additional assistance in their musical journey.
  • Collaborate with parents, support staff, and other teachers to ensure holistic development and address student needs.
  • Serve as a Form Tutor/Class Teacher as assigned, overseeing general welfare and academic progress of a designated class, which may include teaching other subjects.

Professional Development & Collaboration:

  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, school-wide professional development sessions, and training programs, particularly those related to music education and performance.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices, develop curriculum materials, and enhance the overall academic and arts program.
  • Contribute to school events and activities, such as assemblies, concerts, and talent shows, as required.
  • Utilize the DTA software for academic tracking, communication, and appraisal processes.

  • Strictly adhere to all DTA policies and procedures, including those related to punctuality, dress code, safety, and ethical conduct.
  • Uphold the professional standards and values of Discovering Talents Academy at all times.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field. A Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or National Certificate in Education (NCE) is an added advantage.
  • Experience: Minimum of [e.g., 2-4] years of proven experience teaching music to primary school students. Proficiency in teaching multiple instruments (especially those listed) is highly desirable.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Strong knowledge of music theory, history, and various musical instruments. Ability to teach foundational vocal techniques.
  • Technological Proficiency: Proficient in using educational technology and relevant software for music instruction. Experience with school management software (e.g., DTA software) is an advantage.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain musical concepts clearly and inspire young learners.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, parents, and colleagues.
