Boat Skipper at Africa Diving Services Limited (ADS)

Africa Diving Services Limited (ADS), formed in 2010, became fully operational in January 2012. The Company was conceived and equity financed by Nigerian Investors to offer to clients a fully compliant company satisfying all Nigerian Content Legislation, including cooperation agreements for operations with other fully Nigerian-compliant companies as recommended by the NCDMB. ADS also utilises Nigerian companies administratively, including but not limited to Banking/Medical/Insurance / etc.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Boat Skipper

Location: Apapa, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

Responsibilities

• Maintain boats and equipment on board, such as engines, winches, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, and life preservers.
• Measure depths of water, using depth-measuring equipment.
• Read gauges to verify sufficient levels of hydraulic fluid, air pressure, and oxygen.
• Resolve questions or problems with marine officials.
• Signal passing vessels, using whistles, flashing lights, flags, and radios.
• Tow and manoeuvre or signal tugboats to tow barges to destinations.
• Must know the different locations of jetties in Lagos
• Perform daily logs and fill the checklists
• Compute positions, set courses, and determine speeds by using charts, area plotting sheets, compasses, sextants, and knowledge of local conditions.
• Direct and coordinate crew members or workers performing activities such as loading and unloading cargo, steering vessels, operating engines, and operating, maintaining, and repairing ship equipment.

Requirements

• Must be Male
• Must be less than 45 years old
• Must have at least 5 years of experience sailing a boat in Lagos Waters
• Must possess a quarter master certificate or its equivalent

Abilities:

• The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing that there is a problem.
• The ability to know your location in relation to the environment, or to know where other objects are in relation to you.
• The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
• The ability to choose quickly between two or more movements in response to two or more different signals (lights, sounds, pictures). It includes the speed with which the correct response is started with the hand, foot, or other body part.
• The ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly.
• The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
• The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so that others will understand.
• The ability to see under low light conditions.
