Our latest body of work, affordacity: a future african city envisioned around enterprise and sustainability was recently exhibited at the Goethe Institut Lagos and was the subject of a lecture delivered by Head of Design, James George at the University of Pennsylvania. Our work is organised around two hubs in Lagos and Johannesburg.

Job Title: Structural Engineer

About the Role
The deliverables expected of the Structural Engineer are outlined as follows:
Design Structures:
Develop the structural design for defining the detailed form and function of all components in terms of overall size, typical detail, performance and outline specification.
Finite Element Analysis Models:
Produce structural systems and develop Finite Element Analysis models, design and interpret design results with the aid of structural design programs for assigned projects with a view towards safety and stability of structures in accordance with governing codes.
Structural Sustainability Report:
Prepare and provide a comprehensive sustainability report that outlines the project’s sustainability approach.
The report should demonstrate sustainability targets already achieved during the design phase, and clearly define the targets to be attained during subsequent construction stages.
Project Administration:
Effectively administer all engineering activities for medium to large construction projects and supervise efficient working of manpower and financial investments.
Quality Improvement:
Support design personnel and engineers in various quality improvement processes and provide consultations to various departments on technical aspect and perform regular analysis on same
Regulation Compliance:
Provide Information to suitably demonstrate compliance with Building Regulations.
Cost Plan:
Highlight the main materials and workmanship to be used for the project and will assist with the development of the Cost Plan.
Budgeting:
Maintain knowledge on relevant technologies and establish budget and staffing requirements for all projects as per schedule.
Technical Paper Preparation:
Analyze all project requirements and prepare all required technical papers and recommend modifications and changes if required.
In addition, participate in various design meetings to negotiate with all subcontractors.
Quality Control:
Evaluate all construction and engineering processes and ensure efficient quality control on all projects and provide support to engineering team at all times to maintain work schedule.
Research & Development:
Research existing and new material technology to determine practical applications, strength and durability expectations and cost-benefits information, and prepare material recommendations for current and future projects.
Personal and Professional Development:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of construction methods, standards, and regulations, and actively pursue continuous self-development to enhance technical expertise and professional competence.
Ad-hoc Responsibilities:
Effectively manage ad-hoc duties as assigned by the Head of Design.
Post-Occupancy Evaluation:
Undertake a Post-Occupancy Evaluation to correlate designed performance and achieved performance of the structural systems

Requirements
Degree in Structural Engineering (a Master’s degree is an added advantage).
Membership of a related professional organization will be an added advantage
Previous experience as a Structural Engineer or similar field.
