The Junior Cost Accountant will support the costing and financial control functions of the company by collecting, analyzing, and reporting cost-related data.
The role ensures accurate product costing, expense monitoring, and compliance with accounting standards under the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) framework.
This position provides key support in decision-making related to pricing, budgeting, and cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Costing & Product Analysis:
Assist in preparing standard product costing and variance analysis.
Collect, review, and verify data on material, labor, and overhead costs.
Monitor inventory levels and support monthly stock valuation exercises.
Assist in preparing landed cost calculations for imported goods (if applicable).
Budgeting & Forecasting Support:
Support the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
Monitor actual costs against budgeted figures and report variances.
Provide cost-related analysis to aid management decision-making.
Expense Monitoring & Control:
Track departmental expenses and ensure they are within approved budgets.
Maintain accurate cost records and ensure all expenses are properly allocated.
Assist in implementing cost reduction initiatives and efficiency improvements.
Reporting & Documentation:
Assist in preparing monthly cost reports, profitability analysis, and margin reviews.
Ensure accuracy and completeness of all costing data and documentation.
Provide costing information to support pricing strategies and business proposals.
Compliance & Audit Support:
Ensure compliance with ICAN standards, IFRS, and company policies.
Assist in preparing schedules and supporting documents for internal and external audits.
Ensure timely filing of reports required by management and regulators.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Accuracy and timeliness of cost reports and analysis.
Variance between standard cost and actual cost.
Efficiency of cost monitoring and expense tracking.
Compliance with ICAN, IFRS, and company accounting policies.
Contribution to cost savings and process improvements.
Job Requirements
Education & Certification:
B.Sc./HND in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
ICAN certification (ACA or in-view) is mandatory.
Experience:
1–3 years’ experience in cost accounting, management accounting, or finance.
Experience in FMCG, food manufacturing, or production environment is an advantage.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong knowledge of cost accounting methods, budgeting, and variance analysis.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (Sage, QuickBooks, SAP, or Tally).
Analytical and numerical skills with high attention to detail.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to interpret financial data and provide meaningful insights.
