We are looking for an Entertainment Reporterto join the Pulse newsroom and cover the biggest stories, trends, and personalities shaping music, film, TV, celebrity culture, and youth entertainment across Africa and beyond.
The Entertainment Reporter will be responsible for producing timely, accurate, and engaging stories that resonate with young audiences, while also shaping Pulse’s voice in the pop culture landscape.
The role requires someone who is well-connected in the entertainment industry, possesses strong writing and reporting skills, and can strike a balance between speed and accuracy in a fast-paced newsroom.
This is a role for a journalist who thrives in entertainment culture, knows how to break stories, and can tell them in ways that keep Pulse at the centre of the conversation.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting & Writing:
Cover entertainment news, including celebrity updates, music releases, film premieres, events, and industry shifts.
Pitch, research, and write original stories that add depth to breaking news or trends.
Deliver high-quality articles with accuracy, speed, and a clear Pulse voice.
Conduct interviews with entertainers, industry figures, and cultural voices.
File multiple stories per day, balancing breaking news with features and explainers.
Trend Spotting & Pop Culture Coverage:
Stay ahead of entertainment and pop culture trends across Nigeria, Africa, and globally.
Monitor social media conversations, fandom culture, and influencer-driven news.
Identify under-reported stories or angles that resonate with Pulse’s youth-first audience.
Provide live coverage of key entertainment moments (award shows, concerts, red carpets).
Multimedia & Cross-Platform Integration:
Collaborate with the Social and Video teams to adapt stories into social-first and video formats.
Create story packages that include photos, videos, and social embeds for digital storytelling.
Contribute to live updates, explainer threads, and quick-turnaround formats for X, TikTok, and Instagram.
Partner with videographers during interviews or event coverage to deliver both written and visual content.
Editorial Standards & Collaboration:
Uphold Pulse’s editorial standards of accuracy, fairness, and timeliness.
Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief on story assignments and coverage priorities.
Collaborate with other reporters and editors to ensure balanced, broad entertainment coverage.
Ensure stories meet SEO and platform-specific optimisation standards.
Industry Engagement:
Build and maintain a network of entertainment industry contacts for story leads and exclusives.
Represent Pulse at press junkets, screenings, and entertainment events.
Secure interview opportunities and access with key talent.
Requirements
2–4 years of experience in entertainment journalism, reporting, or digital media.
Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills with a sharp, engaging style.
Deep knowledge of entertainment and pop culture (music, film, TV, celebrity culture).
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom environment and deliver multiple stories daily.
Social-first mindset — understands how entertainment stories travel across TikTok, X, and IG.
Familiarity with CMS systems (WordPress or similar) and SEO best practices.
Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative newsroom.
A strong network of entertainment contacts is a plus.
Bonus: multimedia skills (basic video editing, podcasting, or on-camera presence).
