Job Title: Fire and Safety Officer (HSE)

Job Summary
The Fire and Safety Officer (HSE) is responsible for ensuring a safe and compliant working environment within the plywood manufacturing plant.
The role involves implementing and monitoring fire prevention systems, safety programs, and environmental standards to safeguard workers, machinery, materials, and factory property against accidents, hazards, and emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive health, safety, and fire prevention policies in compliance with national HSE regulations and company standards.
Conduct routine inspections of the factory premises, machines, and production lines to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective measures.
Maintain, test, and ensure the readiness of all fire safety systems including extinguishers, hydrants, fire alarms, and emergency exits.
Supervise fire drills, evacuation exercises, and emergency response training for all factory employees.
Conduct risk assessments and job hazard analyses for production processes, especially around wood cutting, pressing, and finishing areas.
Investigate incidents, near-misses, and accidents, prepare detailed reports, and implement preventive and corrective actions.
Ensure proper signage, labeling, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) across all factory departments.
Monitor compliance with safety rules on handling flammable materials such as glue, solvents, and wood dust.
Liaise with relevant authorities (fire service, environmental agency, regulatory bodies) for periodic inspections and certifications.
Provide continuous HSE awareness and safety induction programs for new and existing staff.
Keep accurate documentation of HSE audits, inspections, and training activities.
Support environmental management programs — including waste control, pollution prevention, and proper disposal of factory residues.
Develop emergency response procedures and coordinate first aid and firefighting teams during emergencies.
Qualifications & Experience
B.Sc. Degree / HND qualification in Environmental Science, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field.
3 - 5 years of experience in industrial safety, preferably within manufacturing plant.
Professional certifications in HSE Levels I - III, NEBOSH, or Fire Safety Management
Sound knowledge of Nigerian factory safety regulations, fire codes, and environmental laws.
Strong analytical, observation, and reporting skills.
Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to train and motivate workers.
Core Competencies:
Proactive in identifying safety risks and implementing preventive measures.
Strong incident investigation and problem-solving abilities.
Practical understanding of firefighting equipment and emergency procedures.
High attention to detail, discipline, and integrity.
Ability to work collaboratively with production, maintenance, and HR departments to maintain a safe work environment.
