Job Summary
The Maths Teacher at Discovering Talents Academy (DTA) is responsible for delivering engaging and effective mathematics instruction to primary school pupils.
This role involves fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking, while nurturing a lifelong passion for learning.
The Maths Teacher plays a crucial part in upholding DTA's mission to "create an atmosphere of fun where kids can enjoy being kids" and its vision to "discover and bring out the uniqueness in every child," by ensuring individualized teaching and promoting academic excellence within the SHRID niche, particularly focusing on Skills development, Higher-order thinking, Inquiry-based learning, Numeracy, and Engagement.
Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality, engaging mathematics lessons in accordance with DTA's blended British-Nigerian curriculum and academic standards.
Implement DTA's SHRID niche, particularly focusing on:
Fostering a strong appreciation for mathematical reasoning through problem-solving and real-world applications.
Ensuring consistent use of structured mathematical methods for clarity and accuracy in calculations.
Promoting clear and precise communication of mathematical concepts and reasoning among pupils.
Applying individualized teaching strategies to cater to diverse learning styles and needs in mathematics.
Integrating skill acquisition in areas such as number operations, algebra, geometry, data handling, and problem-solving.
Utilize a variety of teaching methods, resources, and technology (e.g., manipulatives, interactive tools) to make mathematics accessible and engaging for all pupils.
Set clear learning objectives and provide constructive feedback to students to support their progress in all aspects of mathematics.
Prepare pupils for internal and external examinations, including mathematics components of entrance examinations.
Assessment & Reporting:
Design and administer fair, valid, and reliable assessments (tests, quizzes, continuous assessments) to evaluate student understanding and progress in mathematical concepts, problem-solving, and reasoning.
Analyze assessment data to identify learning gaps, inform instructional adjustments, and provide targeted support to students.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, performance, and grades in mathematics.
Prepare comprehensive progress reports for parents, highlighting academic achievements and areas for development in mathematics.
Classroom Management & Environment:
Create a positive, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment conducive to mathematical exploration and learning.
Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure an orderly and respectful learning atmosphere.
Encourage active participation, critical thinking, and collaborative activities (e.g., group problem-solving, peer discussions).
Ensure the classroom is well-resourced with mathematical tools, manipulatives, and visual aids to support instruction.
Student Welfare & Support:
Monitor the academic and social-emotional well-being of students, identifying and addressing any concerns promptly.
Provide individualized support and interventions for students who require additional assistance in mathematical development.
Collaborate with parents, support staff, and other teachers to ensure holistic development and address student needs.
Serve as a Form Tutor/Class Teacher as assigned, overseeing general welfare and academic progress of a designated class, which may include teaching other subjects.
Professional Development & Collaboration:
Actively participate in departmental meetings, school-wide professional development sessions, and training programs, particularly those related to mathematics and numeracy.
Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices, develop curriculum materials, and enhance the overall academic program.
Contribute to school events and activities, such as Math Olympiads, quizzes, or numeracy clubs, as required.
Utilize the DTA software for academic tracking, communication, and appraisal processes.
Policy Adherence:
Strictly adhere to all DTA policies and procedures, including those related to punctuality, dress code, safety, and ethical conduct.
Uphold the professional standards and values of Discovering Talents Academy at all times.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Primary Education with a specialization in Mathematics, or a related field with a strong emphasis on mathematics pedagogy.
A Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or National Certificate in Education (NCE) is an added advantage.
Experience: 2-4 years of proven experience teaching Mathematics at the primary school level.
Experience with a blended British-Nigerian curriculum is a plus.
Subject Matter Expertise: Strong knowledge of primary school mathematics curriculum, including number operations, algebra, geometry, data handling, and problem-solving strategies.
Technological Proficiency: Proficient in using educational technology, interactive whiteboards, and relevant software for teaching mathematics (e.g., math-specific apps or platforms).
Experience with school management software (e.g., DTA software) is an advantage.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex mathematical concepts clearly and concisely.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, parents, and colleagues.
