The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Job Title: Communication Officer II
Location: Abuja (FCT)

The Purpose
Under the supervision of the Communication Coordinator, the Communication Officer supports decision-making by proactively identifying, monitoring and analysing information from a variety of public sources in line with the delegation's priorities.
S/He contextualizes and links the selected information with the political, economic and security environment and performs systematic monitoring of the reputation of the ICRC and National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in local languages and local media.
S/he contributes to designing, planning and implementing communication projects and activities in coordination with the Communication Manager.
The officer also contributes to representing the ICRC externally and building the necessary understanding and acceptance of and support for the ICRC among key stakeholders.
Your Role
Monitor the online news agencies (local and international media) and identify the relevant articles and information for the delegation in a daily media monitoring template and share them with all staff and other stakeholders by email or through GinkGo platform on daily basis.
Monitor social media (Facebook, X/Twitter, blogs and other social media platforms) to identify trends and relevant information and share it via daily media monitoring.
Regularly updates the media and social media influencers mapping of the delegation, and follows the trending topics among them
Prepare thematic reports and thematic analysis of current political, social and humanitarian affairs, as required.
Prepare bi-weekly Social Media reports and the biannual ICRC’s media visibility report.
Support other colleagues of the Communication department and the delegation in the design of internal and / or external surveys
Carry out and/or closely follow the results of external surveys in order to assess the ICRC’s reputation in the public sphere.
In close coordination with other departments (Protection, Networking, Health, etc) organise round tables with key researchers, writers, academics, among other key interlocutors in support to the delegation’s analysis of trends and the context.
With the Communication Coordinator contribute to defining communication and, where relevant, prevention objectives, strategies and plans of action for the geographic area or programme covered, in line with the field sub-structure's priorities and/or the delegation’s communication/prevention strategy.
With the communication coordinator implement relevant activities and develop tools for: operational communication, community engagement, promoting International Humanitarian Law (IHL), building National Red Cross/Red Crescent Society communication capacity, public and digital communication.
Support communication-related training and coaching for field-structure staff and/or other departments when needed.
Contribute, in coordination with the Communication team in Abuja and COM field officers at field level, to effective internal communication (eg. regular presentations, meetings, events, video projections, etc.) and produce/edit internal articles to highlight key activities
Your Profile
Education and Experience:
University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, political science, international relations, sociology, journalism
Minimum 4-6 years’ work experience in a field relevant to communication and/or prevention
Fluent spoken and written English. Knowledge of local languages (Hausa, Kanuri) an asset.
Excellent writing, research and analytical skills
Sound knowledge of the political, social and media environment in Nigeria.
Computer skills (proficiency in MS Office); familiarity with digital communication tools.
Experience in an ICRC operation and IHL knowledge an asset.
You must have a valid working permit to work in Nigeria
