Job Summary

• The Boatswain (Bosun) plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of deck operations aboard offshore support vessels, platforms, or rigs.
• The role involves supervising deck crews, maintaining deck and cargo-handling equipment, and ensuring compliance with offshore safety and maintenance standards.
• The Bosun serves as the key link between deck officers and deck ratings, ensuring all deck activities support offshore production, logistics, and marine integrity operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervision & Leadership
• Lead, assign, and supervise deck crew during maintenance, lifting, mooring, and cargo operations.
• Ensure all deck personnel follow safety procedures and permit-to-work systems.
• Coordinate deck crew activities according to the daily work plan set by the Chief Officer.
• Deck Operations
• Oversee offshore operations such as mooring, anchor handling, towing, and supply loading/unloading.
• Operate and maintain deck machinery, including winches, cranes, and capstans.
• Prepare and secure cargo and equipment for transfer to platforms, rigs, and vessels.
• Maintenance
• Conduct regular inspection, cleaning, and preservation of deck surfaces, fittings, and equipment.
• Maintain ropes, wires, chains, and rigging gear to offshore operational standards.
• Report maintenance needs, damage, or safety hazards to the Chief Officer promptly.
• Safety & Compliance
• Enforce compliance with Safety Management Systems (ISM/ISPS) and offshore HSE regulation
• Participate in safety drills, toolbox meetings, and emergency response exercises.
• Ensure all deck crew are properly equipped with and using appropriate PPE
• Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain accurate records of deck maintenance, safety checks, and daily operations.
• Assist in completing deck logs, maintenance reports, and lifting plans.

Qualifications and Experience

• 3 – 5 years of experience in deck operations within the offshore oil & gas or marine industry.
• Valid STCW certification and Bosun competency endorsement.
• Seafarer’s Identification and Record Book (SIRB) and Offshore Medical Certificate (OGUK or equivalent).
• In-depth knowledge of offshore lifting operations, rigging, and mooring procedures.
• Familiar with Permit to Work (PTW) systems and offshore safety management standards
• Strong leadership and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience on AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) or DP (Dynamic Positioning) vessels.
• Offshore safety certifications such as BOSIET / HUET.
• Familiarity with OCIMF and IMCA operational standards.
