The Head, Haulage Commercial, is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership in managing the commercial, fleet, and logistics activities of the haulage business.
This role ensures the optimal utilization of the company’s fleet, efficient product delivery, cost management, and compliance with operational procedures while maintaining high standards of customer satisfaction and profitability.
Responsibilities
Fleet and Operations Management:
Implement supervisory responsibilities over Fleet Officers to ensure strict adherence to operational procedures, safety standards, and other established processes.
Ensure fleet officers strictly follow assigned schedules, dispatch timelines, and route destinations of trucks on the highway.
Monitor and coordinate the maintenance of trucks undergoing repairs to ensure timely completion and optimal fleet utilization.
Formulate and execute strategies for effective product procurement and delivery to various destinations.
Liaise with relevant departments to ensure optimal truck turnaround time (TAT) and minimize downtime.
Develop and implement feasible salvage and recovery strategies to reduce the impact of accidents or breakdowns on operations.
Commercial and Financial Oversight:
Monitor all commercial activities to ensure costs are minimized and any variations to approved
contractual works are captured, valued, and submitted for approval in a timely manner.
Liaise with the Finance & Accounts team to ensure timely settlement of vendor invoices and adherence to agreed payment terms.
Produce and review weekly commercial and procurement reports showing total procurement value, pending requests, unfinanced procurements, and contract tracking data.
Ensure adherence to approved budgets, while proactively identifying and implementing cost-saving opportunities.
Strategic Leadership and Business Development:
Formulate and execute commercial strategies that support profitability, business expansion, and operational sustainability of the haulage division.
Foster and maintain strategic partnerships with third parties, including regulatory agencies, business partners, and vendors.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify new business opportunities, improve customer service delivery, and increase the company’s market share.
Monitor industry trends, customer expectations, and competitive activity to guide strategic planning and decision-making.
Compliance, Governance, and Risk Management:
Ensure strict compliance with company policies, HSE standards, and regulatory requirements across all fleet and operational activities.
Oversee enforcement of existing company procedures and reporting standards for the fleet team.
Collaborate with relevant departments to resolve disputes related to shortages, product losses, or operational breaches.
Recommend drivers or staff to the Admin/HR department for appropriate disciplinary action, retraining, or replacement as required.
People Management and Development:
Lead, coach, and supervise the fleet and commercial teams to achieve high performance, discipline,and accountability.
Drive the training and development initiatives for the fleet team, fostering continuous learning and capacity enhancement.
Identify and recommend actions to enhance the effective use, control, and performance of the fleet team.
Build a culture of teamwork, safety consciousness, and customer orientation among team members.
Performance and Reporting
Ensure operational efficiency across all haulage stations to achieve set sales and revenue targets.
Prepare and present periodic performance, procurement, and operational reports for management review.
Monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including truck utilization rate, delivery timeliness, cost efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Develop and maintain strong dispute resolution and customer service skills to manage service deliveryfailures effectively.
Perform other duties or assignments as directed by the Executive Director, Haulage and Logistics.
Requirements
Educational Requirement:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or any related discipline.
A Master’s degree or MBA is an added advantage.
Minimum of 10 – 15 years’ relevant experience in supply chain management, haulage, logistics, or fleet management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
Experience in a related sector is highly preferred.
