Job Title: Data Center Structured Cabling Engineer
The Data Center Structured Cabling Engineer is responsible for the design, deployment, maintenance, and integrity of the structured cabling infrastructure across all data center environments.
This role ensures that cabling standards, labeling, and documentation align with industry best practices and internal operational policies.
Working within the Cross-Functional Operations Support team, the engineer collaborates with network, electrical, and mechanical teams to support seamless infrastructure performance and enable efficient, scalable connectivity across customer and internal environments.
Responsibilities
Cabling Design and Implementation:
Plan, design, and implement structured cabling systems for data center white space and MMR (Meet-Me Room) environments
Execute copper and fiber optic cabling installations in compliance with ANSI/TIA/EIA and company standards
Oversee patching layouts, cable routing, labeling, and termination in both horizontal and vertical pathways
Support installation of new cages, racks, cross-connects, and customer deployments.
Operations and Maintenance:
Perform routine inspection, testing, and certification of cabling systems for performance and compliance
Troubleshoot fiber and copper connectivity issues using OTDR, light meters, and other diagnostic tools
Maintain cabling integrity, identify aging or damaged infrastructure, and recommend corrective actions
Coordinate with field engineers and vendors during maintenance windows to minimize impact on services.
Documentation and Compliance:
Maintain accurate as-built drawings, labeling schemes, and patch records within internal systems (e.g., DCIM, Maximo, or similar platforms)
Ensure cabling works comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards
Participate in audits and ensure adherence to internal and external compliance requirements (ISO, ISMS, or customer standards).
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Work closely with other operations units — network, transmission, power, facility, and customer operations
Provide cabling insights and technical input during project design reviews, upgrades, or change management activities
Support capacity planning and optimization efforts in collaboration with data center management.
Continuous Improvement:
Identify opportunities to improve structured cabling processes, materials, and installation methods for efficiency and reliability
Participate in training, cross-functional knowledge sharing, and operational excellence initiatives
Support and contribute to the site’s preventive maintenance and risk mitigation programs
Qualifications
Education & Certification:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical / Telecommunications / Computer Engineering, or related technical field
BICSI certification (e.g., Installer, Technician, or RCDD) preferred
Valid Fiber Optic certification (FOA, CFOT, or equivalent) is an advantage
Experience:
3 - 5 years of experience in structured cabling or data center infrastructure support
Proven hands-on experience with copper and fiber installation, termination, and testing
Strong familiarity with cable management systems, containment, patch panels, and labeling standards
Experience working in Tier III or Tier IV data centers is an added advantage.
Core Competencies:
Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of structured cabling standards, best practices, and industry codes
Attention to Detail: Strong focus on cable routing, labeling accuracy, and system documentation
Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary operations team
Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills and proactive issue resolution
Change Readiness: Flexible, adaptive, and able to support evolving data center technologies and upgrades.
Working Conditions:
Data center environment with exposure to controlled temperatures, raised floors, and high noise levels
Requires physical activity including lifting, bending, and cable handling
May involve after-hours maintenance windows or on-call duties as required
