Job Title: Head of Accounts

Description
The Head of Accounts is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations in the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in financial reporting and transaction processing.
Reporting to the Head of Finance, the role provides hands-on management of the accounting function, supervising the Accounts Associate and directly handling higher-level tasks such as financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and process improvements.
As the business grows, the Head of Accounts will play a key role in building and leading an expanded accounting team, establishing robust systems, and aligning the function to support corporate objectives.
This position requires strong technical expertise and leadership skills to deliver in a start-up environment while positioning the function for future scale.
Core Functions
Financial Management and Oversight: Supervise all accounting operations, including accounts receivable/payable, general ledger, and cost accounting, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Team Leadership and Development: Manage and mentor the accounts team, conduct appraisals, and develop capacity to deliver organizational goals.
Reporting and Period-End Close: Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and ensure timely completion of period-end closing activities.
Internal Controls and Compliance: Establish, monitor, and enforce robust internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure adherence to statutory and tax obligations.
Business Support and Process Improvement: Partner with other departments to provide financial insights and drive continuous improvement initiatives in accounting processes.
Tax Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable transaction taxes (VAT, WHT, PAYE, etc.), including accurate filing, remittances, and preparation of tax schedules to avoid penalties.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Professional certification (e.g., ACA, ACCA) required.
5 - 7 years accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role, preferably in a manufacturing or FMCG environment.
Strong knowledge of IFRS and financial management practices.
Strong knowledge of Nigerian tax laws (VAT, WHT, PAYE, Company Income Tax) and experience in ensuring tax compliance.
Proven track record of leading teams and delivering results in a fast-paced setting.
Technical Skills:
Expertise in general ledger accounting, financial reporting, cost accounting, and inventory management.
Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, QuickBooks, Sage).
Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial analysis skills.
Soft / Power Skills:
