The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is one of the eleven electricity distribution companies that emerged after the unbundling of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).The company is saddled with the primary responsibility of distributing and marketing electricity to end users within the five states in the South-East geo-political zone; namely: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, with a total of 18 Business Districts offices across these states.

Job Title: Legal Officer

Job Purpose
Being the Legal Officer, the role is responsible for providing legal guidance, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, and protecting the company’s interests in all legal matters.
It involves drafting, reviewing, and interpreting legal documents, managing litigations, advising management on legal risks, and ensuring that the company’s operations and decisions align with applicable laws and internal policies.
The role supports the corporate legal framework while addressing state-specific legal needs to safeguard the organization’s integrity and reputation.
Key Responsibilities
To ensure that the organization is in compliance with the applicable laws, rules, and industry
regulations
To proffer counsel to company executives and other departments on relevant legal issues to ensure compliance with legal and corporate objectives
To advise company executives on contracts status, legal risks, and terms of business transactions
To interface with other departments and units to lead contract development and formation of new agreements with counterparties
To negotiate, draft, review and execute agreements, contracts, and other legal instruments
To handle all civil, commercial, regulatory disputes, and manage relationships with external counsel for outsourcing criminal and civil matters
To identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk, and develop/implement preventive or proactive action plans
To proffer counsel with regard to employee issues and management of labour relations from a legal perspective
To guide company employees on compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and corporate policies
To provide legal interpretation to corporate communications and business transactions
To research legal issues impacting the company by identifying applicable statutes, judicial decisions, and codes and develop legal solutions to the issues.
Qualification and Experience
Educational:
LL.B (Hons) Degree in Law from a recognized institution
B.L (Barrister at Law) and Call to the Nigerian Bar.
Professional & Personal Competencies:
Minimum of two (2) years relevant post-call experience in corporate or commercial law practice
Strong knowledge and practical understanding of corporate, commercial, and regulatory law
Proven experience in contract drafting, negotiation, and legal documentation
Ability to assess and mitigate legal risks, and develop proactive legal strategies
Good understanding of litigation management, dispute resolution, and compliance frameworks
Familiarity with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and corporate governance principles
High level of professional ethics, integrity, and confidentiality
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities
Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively under pressure with minimal supervision.
