The Barman is responsible for preparing, mixing, and serving beverages to guests in a courteous and professional manner while maintaining high standards of cleanliness, customer service, and bar presentation.
The role ensures that the bar area operates effectively, beverages are well-stocked, and customers enjoy a pleasant and memorable experience.
The ideal candidate must be skilled, well-groomed, friendly, and attentive, with strong knowledge of drinks, garnishes, and customer service.
Role Responsibilities
Beverage Preparation and Service:
Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks according to standard recipes.
Mix cocktails, mocktails, smoothies, coffees, and specialty drinks as requested.
Ensure correct garnishing, glassware selection, and beverage presentation.
Serve drinks promptly and ensure excellent customer interaction at all times.
Suggest drinks and upsell premium products to enhance customer experience.
Customer Service:
Welcome guests warmly and maintain a friendly, professional atmosphere at the bar.
Take and confirm drink orders accurately.
Respond to guest inquiries about beverages and make recommendations.
Handle customer complaints politely and escalate when necessary.
Promote a positive experience that encourages guest retention.
Bar Inventory and Stock Management:
Check and maintain adequate stock levels of drinks, syrups, garnishes, and bar supplies.
Ensure proper storage and rotation of beverages (FIFO method).
Conduct regular stock counts and report shortages to the supervisor
Ensure bar fridges, dispensers, and display units are organized and clean.
Cash Handling and POS Operation
Process payments using POS systems or cash as required.
Issue receipts and record sales accurately.
Follow cash-handling and reconciliation procedures.
Report any discrepancies or unusual transactions immediately.
Compliance and Safety Standards:
Follow all laws and regulations regarding the sale and serving of alcohol.
Ensure responsible alcohol service and monitor guest intoxication levels.
Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards in the bar area.
Ensure proper sanitation of glassware, utensils, counters, and equipment.
Comply with all food safety, health, and safety guidelines.
Bar Maintenance and Presentation:
Keep the bar area clean, organized, and visually appealing.
Clean and polish glassware, bar equipment, and surfaces.
Check functionality of bar equipment and report faults immediately.
Ensure waste is disposed of properly and the bar remains uncluttered.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
Work closely with the kitchen, waiters, supervisors, and service staff.
Assist with bar restocking during peak hours.
Support bar set-up for events, special functions, or themed nights.
Attend training sessions and contribute to continuous improvement.
Experience / Qualification
Minimum of SSCE; OND/HND/BSc is an added advantage
1–3 years’ experience as a Barman, Mixologist, or Bar Attendant
Experience in restaurants, lounges, hotels, or clubs is highly desirable
Knowledge of cocktails, beverages, and bar hygiene standards is required
Certification in hospitality or mixology is an added advantage
