The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional group of fifteen West African countries. Founded on 28 May 1975, with the signing of the Treaty of Lagos, its mission is to promote economic integration across the region.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Translator Portuguese

Location: West Africa

Line Supervisor: Head of Conferences, Protocol and Language Services Division

Job Overview                                                                        

  • Under the supervision of the Head of the Conferences, Protocol and Language Services Division, the incumbent is responsible for carrying out translation work into Portuguese for the Organization.

Role and Responsibilities 

  • Certify and translate documents for external meetings.
  • Translate internal documents.
  • Set up a database of Translators residing in member countries.
  • Coordinate the creation of terminology databases, glossaries, etc.
  • Manage the terminology and reference database to ensure accuracy and consistency in the use of language and terms.
  • Establish and maintain an equipment maintenance log to ensure the proper management of WAHO’s interpretation and translation equipment.
  • Be able to revise own translation work as well as texts translated by other translators. Identify and use computer-assisted translation, machine translation and on-screen editing tools.
  • Participate in the selection, evaluation and training of potential translators.
  • Carry out any other official duties that may be assigned by line supervisor.

Required Qualifications, Work Experience and Competencies
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in translation from a recognized university.
  • A Master’s degree in Translation is recommended if the Bachelor’s degree is not in Translation studies.

Work Experience:

  • Seven (7) years’ professional experience in Translation and Editing (including at least two (2) years’ experience as an Editor). Perfect command of translation software, electronic tools and databases;
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills; ability to meet the highest standards of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the style and nuances of the original text;
  • Mastery of computer-assisted translation, machine translation and on-screen editing tools.

Knowledge of ECOWAS:

  • Proficiency in  information communication technologies (ICT);
  • Fluency in oral and written expressions in one of the ECOWAS official languages of the community (English, French & Portuguese). Knowledge of an additional one will be an added advantage.

 Planning and Implementing:

  • Knowledge of internal planning cycles and ability to contribute to the development and to implement Community-wide or institution policy by determining target audience, building coalitions with the appropriate population, and monitor progress;
  • Ability to consider external circumstances, factors and trends when organizing project activities to ensure the best outcomes;
  • Ability to review process outcomes, correspondence, reports, and policy documents to develop achievable plans;
  • Ability to conduct meetings with staff, stakeholders, colleagues and others to ascertain  organizational  program and/or project needs, making adjustments to plans and activities accordingly;
  • Ability to adjust project plans based on input from staff and stakeholders and/or ability to design and implement guidelines, tools and templates to accommodate new or revised programmes and services.

General Conditions:
Citizenship:

  • Applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS Member State.

Age Limit:

  • They must not be more than 45 years of age at the time of recruitment.

Duty Station:

  • WAHO is in process of relocation from its current location in Burkina Faso. the post will be located in an ECOWAS country to which WAHO relocate.

Salary
$44,965.64 – $52,379.70 Annually.
