Job Title: School Nurse
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The School Nurse oversees the emotional, mental, physical and social health of students, providing basic health services throughout the school day.
The School Nurse manages students by giving medication as needed, working with parents and teachers to create and enforce care plans.
Overview of the Role
The School Nurse is responsible for providing health services to students during school hours.
They will provide first aid, treat mild illnesses and promote preventive care by educating students and staff on how to avoid communicable diseases and having proper hygiene.
Relationships:
The School Nurse is selected by the Director/HOS in consultation with the Head of Admin and the HR.
The School Nurse will report to the Head of Admin who will provide strategic leadership and day to day oversight of the School Nurse.
Responsibilities
Provide healthcare to students with mild health problems in the school and at school events.
Carry out periodic temperature checks on all children in the school
Provide first aid on all cases brought to the medical room.
Ensure all school health and medical policies are adhered to.
Referral of major incidents or accidents appropriately.
Support the development and update of school health policies.
Carry out weekly weight checks on the Day-care children.
Provide counselling and medical advice to staff.
Maintaining accurate medical records on all children and staff in the school.
Act as a resource person for classes on health topics.
Administer of medication to staff and children where necessary.
Keep stock of drugs and medical items and other medical items.
Prepare dressing packs for first aid.
Sterilise all medical equipment
Educate students, staff and parents on healthy habits, such as proper nutrition and hygiene.
Detect health problems in early stages through regular screenings.
Keep track of students’ vaccination records.
Keep track of students with allergies and share with the kitchen department
Actively participating in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying and emergencies that may occur at school.
Health & Safety:
Supervise the medical room (including care of sick, injured and distressed individuals until better and further care can be arranged with parents, hospital, dispense drugs as appropriate etc.)
Review, monitor and record the health status of all students on entry to school in accordance with Health Programme
Implement and maintain arrangements for first-aid provision
Monitor/maintain and update student medical/health records
Ensure school environment is safe for children and school staff (e.g. prevention of communicable diseases)
Overseeing infection control measures
Pastoral Care:
Devise and implement strategies to ensure that the most vulnerable students and those with particular personal needs/problems are identified and appropriately supported.
Communication:
Advise parents and staff on immunisation programmes and outbreaks of communicable diseases.
Uphold medical confidentiality in line with legal, duty of confidentiality to students and maintain medical records accurately, confidentially and safely.
Keep records of all accidents to staff/students and visitors
Administration:
To be aware of the importance of accurate, clear and precise documentation.
To keep all nursing records to a high standard.
To be responsible for maintaining the medical records of both TTDN and BBS Schools
To be fully competent with the administration of medication in accordance with relevant protocols.
To be responsible for all general office procedures in the Medical Room, to include regularly checking emails, voicemail messages and all other administration.
To be competent with the use of a computer, managing medical records and communicating.
To be responsible for health and safety issues within the Medical Room whilst on duty.
To report accidents/injuries to the School Administrator
To follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.
To maintain treatment room stock, hygiene and tidiness.
Update Medical policies and procedures periodically.
Documenting and reporting of all incidents or accidents and first aid carried out
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Health Service Delivery:
Number of student clinic visits per term, categorized (e.g., illness, injury, mental health).
Emergency response time (target: within 2–5 minutes of being called).
First aid incidents managed in line with school protocol (target: 100%).
Chronic condition care plans in place and reviewed (e.g., asthma, diabetes) – 100% updated.
Medication administration accuracy rate (target: 100%, no errors).
Preventive Health & Screenings:
Number of screenings conducted (vision, hearing, BMI, dental) per age group/term.
Percentage of students with updated immunization records (target: 95–100%).
Number of health education sessions delivered (nutrition, hygiene, puberty, mental wellbeing).
Vaccination compliance rate for school-required or recommended vaccines.
Medical Emergency Procedures & Compliance:
Compliance with medical emergency protocols during drills and real events (target: 100%).
Number of emergency drills participated in or led (per year).
Audit score on adherence to emergency procedures (e.g., asthma attack, anaphylaxis, seizure).
Post-incident reports submitted within required timeframe (target: within 24 hours).
Availability and maintenance of emergency equipment – 100% readiness.
Clinical Best Practice & Record-Keeping:
Clinical practices aligned with current nursing standards and school health policies
Audit of treatment records for accuracy and completeness (target: 95%+ compliance)
Confidentiality compliance rate (no breaches; 100% adherence)
Timely and accurate documentation (target: same-day entry for 95% of cases).
Safeguarding & Student Wellbeing:
Number of safeguarding concerns identified and reported
Follow-up rate on vulnerable student cases (target: 100%)
Participation in multidisciplinary meetings (e.g., wellbeing, behavioural, SEN support)
Mental health concerns appropriately triaged or referred within 48 hours.
Staff & Parent Engagement:
Parent inquiries or updates responded to within 24–48 hours
Staff trained in health procedures (e.g., CPR, EpiPen, seizure response) – % completion per term
Health communication (e.g., newsletters, health alerts) issued per term.
Up-to-date certification in First Aid, CPR, Safeguarding, etc.
Participation in policy review meetings or health audits (at least once a term).
Skills:
Able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication.
Proficiency with computers and computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Knowledge of many areas of health including mental health.
Knowledge of school laws and policies.
Must have a passion to work with children.
Ability to work independently and with a team.
Ability to assess situations and act quickly.
BLS/CPR certification.
Knowledge of state health regulations.
Ability to recognise signs and symptoms of ill health conditions to render prompt interventions.
Knowledge and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
Must have a passion for practical nursing and emergency nursing.
Must be professionally fluent in English and proficient use of a computer.
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or any health-related field
Experience: Minimum of 3 years experience preferably working in a school
Must have a valid practising nursing licence
Member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria
Must have attended School of Nursing and be an independent nurse
Additional experience in Paediatrics Health care is an added advantage
Knowledge of Pharmacology will be an added advantage.
