Job Summary
The Finance & Business Operations Lead provides strategic and operational leadership across our organisation's financial management, donor compliance, administrative functions, and overall business operations.
This role ensures effective resource stewardship, strong financial integrity, operational excellence, and compliance with NGO regulations and donor frameworks.
The ideal candidate must be a highly analytical leader with a deep understanding of nonprofit financial systems, multi-donor funding environments, programme operations, and the operational structures that enable organisational efficiency and sustainability.
Job Description
Financial Leadership & Reporting:
Oversee financial management across all donor-funded programmes and organisational operations.
Develop and present accurate financial reports for donors, partners, management, and the Board.
Prepare expenditure analyses, variance reports, burn-rate trackers, and financial narratives.
Ensure compliance with donor guidelines, grant agreements, audit requirements, and NGO financial standards.
Lead statutory, internal, and donor-specific audits and coordinate follow-up actions.
Strengthen digital finance systems and adopt technology-driven solutions for automation.
Monitor financial risks and implement mitigation measures.
Budgeting, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A):
Lead the annual budgeting cycle, quarterly forecasts, and long-term financial planning.
Provide budgeting support for fundraising, grant applications, and programme proposals.
Oversee tax compliance including PAYE, VAT, WHT, pensions, and annual filings.
Ensure timely reconciliations of programme accounts, bank accounts, ledgers, and vendor statements.
Review and approve advances, retirements, requisitions, and supporting financial documentation.
Conduct scenario planning and cost-efficiency analysis to support organisational decisions.
Business Operations Management:
Oversee daily operations, including procurement, office administration, logistics, and facilities management.
Ensure operational systems and structures align with NGO governance standards and donor requirements.
Develop and enforce SOPs for finance, procurement, operations, and internal controls.
Lead procurement planning, contract management, vendor due diligence, and value-for-money reviews.
Ensure proper documentation, inventory management, and asset tracking.
Coordinate operational support for programmes and cross-functional teams.
Compliance, Governance & Internal Controls:
Ensure compliance with donor regulations, national laws, labour regulations, and NGO financial guidelines.
Strengthen and monitor internal control systems across finance, procurement, and operations.
Conduct regular compliance checks and internal audits.
Maintain and update financial, procurement, and operational policies.
Provide governance support for Board reporting, audits, and statutory documentation.
Strategic Business Support:
Collaborate with the CEO to drive strategic planning, organizational performance, and operational efficiency.
Provide timely dashboards, KPI reporting, and operational insights to leadership.
Support organisational growth, new partnerships, expansion, and system optimisation.
Implement process improvements and digital tools that enhance productivity and accountability.
People Leadership & Capacity Development:
Supervise, mentor, and build capacity for finance, admin, and operations teams.
Lead recruitment and onboarding processes within the finance and operations function.
Conduct performance evaluations and develop plans for team members' growth and improvement.
Train staff on budgeting, internal controls, compliance, donor guidelines, and operational processes.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
7–10 years of progressive professional experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
Professional certification: ICAN, ACCA, CPA, CFA (completed or in progress).
Proven experience in donor-funded NGO financial management (USAID, FCDO, EU, UN agencies, Foundations, Bilateral donors, etc.).
Strong knowledge of IFRS, GAAP, NGO audit requirements, grant compliance, and management of multi-year donor budgets.
Demonstrated experience managing procurement processes within an NGO context.
Proficient in accounting and ERP systems (QuickBooks, Sage, Zoho, SAP, or similar).
Desirable:
Master’s degree (MBA, MFIN, Economics, or related field).
Experience working with gender-focused, social impact, or advocacy organisations.
Exposure to organisational development and business operations strategy.
Familiarity with compliance frameworks for nonprofit governance in Nigeria and internationally.
