Job Title: Generator Technician
Location: Abuja (FCT)
Main Function
The Generator Technician is responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing the hotel’s generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply at all times.
The role includes diagnosing faults, carrying out preventive maintenance, monitoring performance, and supporting the engineering team during power transitions.
The ideal candidate must have strong technical knowledge of diesel generators, be safety-conscious, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced hospitality environment.
Operate and monitor generators during power changeovers or outages.
Check oil pressure, temperature, frequency, and voltage to ensure stable operation.
Record generator readings in the logbook and report abnormalities.
Ensure smooth coordination with the electrician and ATS system during switching.
Maintenance & Repairs:
Perform routine preventive maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, and coolant checks.
Inspect belts, hoses, batteries, and electrical connections for wear or damage.
Diagnose faults related to starting issues, low voltage, overheating, or shutdown alarms.
Troubleshoot and repair engine, alternator, and control panel problems.
Fuel & Lubrication Management:
Monitor and refill fuel levels in a safe and timely manner.
Check for fuel leaks, air in fuel lines, or contamination.
Ensure lubrication levels are maintained for smooth engine performance.
Maintain proper records of fuel usage and servicing.
Electrical & ATS Support:
Assist in testing and maintaining the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS).
Check relays, contactors, breakers, and wiring connections.
Support electrical team during power distribution issues.
Communicate faults quickly to avoid downtime.
Safety & Compliance:
Follow strict safety procedures when working around live equipment and high temperatures.
Use proper tools and protective gear during maintenance.
Report hazards such as fuel leaks, smoke, overheating, or unusual noise immediately.
Keep the generator house clean, ventilated, and well-organized.
Team Support & Reporting:
Work closely with the maintenance team to ensure efficient operations.
Respond quickly to emergency calls and generator faults.
Update supervisor on completed tasks, pending issues, and required spare parts.
Attend technical training sessions and maintenance briefings.
Experience / Qualification
Minimum of SSCE; technical/vocational training in generator mechanics is an added advantage.
2 – 5 years experience working with diesel generators (30KVA–500KVA or above).
Experience working in hotels, estates, or commercial facilities is preferred.
Good knowledge of generator engines, alternators, control panels, and basic electrical systems.
Ability to use testing tools such as multimeters and clamp meters.
Competencies / Skills:
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
Good knowledge of engine maintenance and fault detection.
Ability to interpret basic control panel readings (voltage, frequency, alarms).
Ability to multitask and work under pressure.
Good communication and teamwork abilities.
Strong understanding of safety practices around electrical and fuel systems.
