We have been visible in Borno Adamawa and Yobe states implementing projects in Education, Protection (Child /GBV), WaSH, Nutrition, Empowerment/Livelihood, Governance, and Peace Building. Job Summary
The Protection Sector Co-Coordinator will work with the designated UNHCR Nigeria Protection Sector Coordinator to support the Sector’s coordination role in accordance with IASC guidelines on Sector leadership and accountability.
The Co-Coordinator will work to improve the representation of NGOs and other key stakeholders in Sector activities, strengthen effective management of the Sector and enhance humanitarian protection program and advocacy responses.
Responsibilities
Support the development of a Protection Sector strategy following a consultative process with partners and stakeholders. Support the Protection Sector to ensure that protection informs and shapes the overall humanitarian response and that the protection response is integrated into the Humanitarian Country Team’s common humanitarian action plan.
Organize and facilitate meetings in line with the Principles of Partnership, ensuring that Sector meetings are consultative and results oriented.
Facilitate coordination with government counterparts and other relevant authorities.
Support the design of transition strategies for the Protection Sector: facilitate the development of a strategy for the Sector ensuring proper linkages with disaster risk reduction, relief, and recovery and development efforts.
Facilitate the coordination and conduct of Protection Sector or Inter-Sector level protection needs assessments, including participatory assessments of affected populations.
Provide strategic inputs to development of common funding criteria, resource mobilisation and prioritization within the Protection Sector for inclusion in Consolidated Appeals and pooled funds processes
Establish mechanisms for accountable and transparent financial resource allocation within the Sector.
Facilitate the delivery of protection training activities for Protection Sector members, other local partners, and relevant authorities.
Coordinate initiatives to build the protection capacity of the national and local government, partners and civil society.
Ensure the integration of cross-cutting issues in the work of the Protection Sector, including any work developed by sub-Sectors or working groups.
Ensure adherence of Protection Sector activities to Guidelines on Age, Gender and Diversity Mainstreaming.
Through Sector-wide consultative processes, provide input into the development of global protection policy and standards led by the Global Protection Sector.
Support reporting and information sharing within the Protection Sector and at the intersectoral level.
Support and facilitate the Protection Sector information management strategy and mechanisms.
Ensure that the Protection Sector produces regular updates and briefing notes on the protection concerns in the affected population, response activities, challenges and recommendations.
Identify core advocacy concerns for the Protection Sector through a consultative process.
Facilitate joint Sector/ inter-Sector initiatives to ensure regular and consistent advocacy.
Help foster a consistent interpretation and application of international law and related IASC legal standards and protection policies.
Promote the Protection Sector’s adherence to international human rights instruments, the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement as well as other relevant international and regional instruments; Support local interventions of advocacy to promote compliance with relevant international, regional law.
Promote and help strengthen national legislation relevant to internal displacement and durable solutions.
Facilitate Sector meetings and represent the Protection Sector in meetings with sectoral and external partners, authorities and other relevant interlocutors.
Organise and facilitate Sector meetings, work and cooperate with focal points subgroups/working groups and ad hoc/task-related bodies for specific issues.
Monitor the allocation of financial and other resources within the Protection Sector, when required, such as with regard to Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) or Common Humanitarian Funds (CHF).
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualification:
Education:
Advanced University Masters or Degree in Social Sciences and related field with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in humanitarian response.

Demonstrate an understanding of the international humanitarian response and coordination mechanisms, and humanitarian reform.
Able to take into consideration the interests of NGOs (International and national) while advocating or lobbying for any cause. The sector is guided by the principles of neutrality, impartiality and advocacy for all.
Experience working with UN agencies on Protection matters.
Demonstrate personal and professional Integrity in all Interactions.
Context/Specific skills, knowledge and experience:
Strong leadership and coordination skills. Considerable relevant field experience in Protection projects in humanitarian and development programs preferable with nongovernmental organizations and in more than one country.
Experience and/or understanding of Protection related issues in humanitarian and development contexts.
Experience in management and capacity building of teams in complex contexts.
Proven record of training/skills development of Individuals and teams, including partner organizations.
Proven ability to analyze complex humanitarian and recovery contexts at the local and national level, monitor changes and translate into appropriate strategic planning
Good assessment, analytical, monitoring and evaluating and planning skills and project management skills to enable program delivery.
Ability to consolidate and triangulate information received from various sources
