Job Title: Driver
Location: Sokoto
Job Purpose
The Project Driver will provide safe, reliable and timely transportation services to support project implementation.
The role is critical to ensuring staff mobility, field access, and the safe movement of project materials while adhering strictly to security, safety and organisational policies.
Key Responsibilities
Driving and Transportation:
Drive International Alert staff, partners and visitors safely and responsibly to project sites, meetings and official duties.
Ensure timely pickup and drop-off in accordance with approved travel plans.
Transport project materials, equipment and documents as required.
Ensure compliance with Nigerian traffic laws and International Alert driving policies at all times.
Vehicle Maintenance and Management:
Maintain assigned vehicle(s) in good working condition at all times.
Conduct daily and routine vehicle checks including fuel, oil, water, tyres, lights and brakes.
Ensure vehicles are serviced according to schedule and report mechanical faults promptly.
Keep accurate vehicle logbooks, fuel records and maintenance documentation.
Safety, Security and Administrative and Support Duties:
Adhere strictly to International Alert’s safety and security procedures and movement protocols.
Monitor road and security conditions and report any risks or incidents immediately.
Ensure all passengers use seat belts and observe safety requirements.
Support emergency response procedures, including breakdowns and security incidents.
Support basic administrative and logistics tasks when required.
Assist with loading and unloading of project materials.
Ensure vehicle documents including insurance, roadworthiness and licenses are valid and available.
Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle at all times.
Uphold International Alert’s safeguarding, PSEA and code of conduct standards.
Maintain professionalism, confidentiality and respectful conduct towards staff, partners and community members.
Report any safeguarding or safety concerns through appropriate channels.
Participate actively in the management processes of the team, including team meetings, sharing of information, context analysis, and strategy development
Participate in relevant state level strategic forums, as delegated by line manager
Any other reasonable activities as determined by the line manager
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum of secondary school education; additional training in driving or mechanics is an advantage.
Valid Nigerian driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
Minimum of three (3) years’ professional driving experience, preferably with an NGO or international organisation.
Proven experience driving in rural and urban areas in North West Nigeria.
Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting.
Ability to read and write basic English; Hausa language proficiency is required.
Language Requirement:
English (oral and written), and Hausa fluency.
Knowledge of any other languages prevalent in Sokoto would be an advantage.
