About the Project
The Tom Brown project is a community-based nutrition intervention designed to improve the nutritional status of children aged 6–59 months. The project focuses on preventing malnutrition by providing nutrition education, food demonstrations, and locally produced nutritious foods (Tom Brown).
The project supports early screening of children using MUAC, promotes Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MICYN) practices, and encourages caregivers to prepare nutritious meals at home using affordable and locally available ingredients. It also promotes good hygiene practices and healthy behaviors at the household level.
Through this project, we aim to reduce malnutrition, improve child growth, and support families to become more self-reliant in meeting their nutrition needs.
Job Summary
The Nutrition Assistant will support the effective implementation of the Tom Brown (TmB) project at community. The role focuses on nutrition screening, distribution of Tom Brown, caregiver education, data collection, and community engagement to improve the nutritional status of children and vulnerable groups.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Support nutrition screening of children aged 6–59 months using MUAC and oedema checks.
Assist in the distribution of Tom Brown and other nutrition commodities according to project guidelines.
Ensure correct ration size and proper beneficiary identification during distribution.
Support referral of malnourished children to OTP, TSFP, or Stabilization Centers as appropriate.
Conduct nutrition education sessions for caregivers on Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MICYN) food preparation, hygiene, and proper use of Tom Brown.
Demonstrate correct preparation of Tom Brown at community and facility levels.
Ensure accurate and timely collection of nutrition and distribution data.
Follow-up and ensure CNMs interact with the beneficiaries properly.
Provide a daily and weekly report to the nutrition officer.
Documents lessons learned in specific technical areas.
Treat beneficiaries with dignity and apply AHSF Code of Ethics and Conduct, the UN Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in the field, including sensitizing Field Staffs and vendors/agents on such principles
Required Profile
The Nutrition Assistant WILL be based in Maiduguri.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Public Health, community health or other relevant field.
1-2 years’ work experience in implementing CMAM, IYCF, and other community-based nutrition activities. Experience in MAM treatment using Tom Brown approach is desirable.
Master’s degree in relevant fields; Nutrition, Public Health, Community Health will be an added advantage
Be proficient in the use of computer applications (Microsoft Office - Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Have excellent team, project management and representation competencies.
Ability to speak local languages in will be an added advantage.
Have previous NGO experience managing mobilization in different interventions (i.e. CBT, WASH, Nutrition) preferably.
Be committed to Action the AHSF’s mission, values, and policies.
