Gender and Protection Officer at Action Against Hunger | ACF-International

It served more than 21 million people in 2018 alone.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Gender and Protection Officer

Location: Sokoto

Key Responsibilities
Mission 1: Lead the implementation of gender equality and protection, including mainstreaming initiatives and strategies.
Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Promote safe access to SRHR information and services, particularly for women, adolescent girls, and other vulnerable groups.
  • Coordinate with health and protection partners to strengthen community awareness on maternal health, family planning, adolescent SRHR, and prevention of early/forced marriage.
  • Support integration of SRHR considerations into RECAP activities through community engagement and referrals.
  • Leads and conduct gender analysis, technical studies, assessments on Gender in EU FPI project.
  • Identify individuals with specific protection needs, including GBV survivors and persons requiring SRHR services.
  • Facilitate timely and confidential referrals to GBV, SRHR, health, psychosocial, and legal services.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical data handling standards.
  • Provides technical input on Gender and protection mainstreaming and/or coordinate technical support on gender sensitive and inclusive programming in health, nutrition, and humanitarian protection sectors with relevant sector specialists if required;
  • Ensures that project activities are carried out with an inclusive lens, cultural sensitivity, promotes gender equality and inclusion of marginalized groups;
  • Works with field teams to ensure access and participation of women, men, girls and boys at risk in Action Against Hunger’s response, recovery and rehabilitation work.
  • Conduct protection related and gender leadership trainings for project staff, community and youth leaders across target communities.
  • Takes lead in the development of gender and protection mainstreaming work plans in the implementation of EU FPI project activities in the LGA in collaboration and coordination with other sectors.
  • Leads in integrating protection and gender into MEAL processes in operation areas; setting of specific indicators for process monitoring and follow up that, advising team in getting gender specific information thorough spot monitoring and Post Distribution Monitoring (PDM) process;
  • Initiates innovative documentation process to capture learning and changes, support team to obtain sex, age and other disaggregating data;
  • Supports local stakeholders in organizing and carrying out advocacy and campaign for greater gender equality and equity in humanitarian protection programmes in Sokoto state.
  • Engages with State and Local Women’s rights organizations and mobilize collective voice around gender discrimination in the post conflict setting;
  • Proactively represent Action Against Hunger and participate in gender and protection working groups in Sokoto.
  • Ensures Protection and Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) measures and reporting mechanism are in place and raise awareness among teams, project stakeholders and community.

Mission 2: Support the capacity building for Project teams and organizational development for LGA stakeholders
Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure survivor-centred, confidential referral of GBV survivors in line with established referral pathways.
  • Support the identification, training, and engagement of community-based gender champions to promote gender equality, GBV prevention, positive social norms, and safe access to services.
  • Strengthen referral linkages and coordination with One-Stop Centers to ensure timely, confidential, and survivor-centred access to integrated GBV, health, psychosocial, and legal services
  • Support the establishment and/or strengthening of women- and adolescent-friendly safe spaces for information sharing, psychosocial support, GBV risk mitigation, and SRHR awareness.
  •  Provides orientation sessions to community stakeholders, including camp and host community leaders to increase understanding of gender and protection needs of beneficiaries
  • Conduct capacity assessments and facilitate capacity building for the project teams to enhance their motivation and effective implementation of gender strategies. 
  • Ensures identification and satisfaction of training needs for the project staff on relevant standards and instruments for gender equality and humanitarian protection. 
  • Designs and implements demand-driven programme approaches and methodologies aiming towards capacity building, working in partnerships, policy analysis and advocacy. 
  • Develops and facilitates capacity building programs on gender sensitivity and gender mainstreaming, as well as gender issues pertaining to gender advocacy. 
  • Designs and documents training modules and capacity building processes.

Mission 3: Lead projects monitoring and reporting on gender equality and protection mainstreaming issues at the LGA level.
Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all trainings and meeting records are dully in place for all activities (attendance sheet, on-job coaching sessions, workshop/meeting reports)
  • Ensure Biweekly and Monthly reports are submitted timely to the FSL D/PM 
  • Submit issues log report to FSL D/PM with updates on specific actions taken, recommendations and mitigation.
  • Share success stories on FSL interventions in the LGA of intervention.
  • Support preparation of farmer group and VSLA monthly meeting records for effective group management 
  • Submit situation reports on multisectoral issues affecting livelihoods of farmer groups and VSLA.
  • Support FSL D/PM in developing FSL timelines on all FSL activities in LGA of intervention. 
  • Support FSL D/PM in developing financial forecast in line with the FSL activity timelines and planning at LGA level. Take the initiative to understand the logical framework and review the Gender and protection mainstreaming indicators (LFA) of the project accordingly.
  • Ensure the compilation of need/feasibility assessments and related reports. These reports must be well synthesized, documented and transmitted to the line manager.
  • Contribute ideas based on field experiences in informing gender equality and equity and Training manuals as requested.
  • Responsible for supervising and quality assurance of all Gender equality and protection mainstreaming interventions in a given LGA of intervention.
  • In collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team, leads the design and implementation of transparent and accountable mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating progress for Action Against Hunger Programs.
  • Guide the field teams to develop a comprehensive knowledge base on all aspects of gender by contributing to gender analysis and situational studies, and advise on the gender sensitive data to be gathered and the indicators that will serve as the basis of developing effective gender programme strategies.
  • Help monitor the overall gender and protection activities in Health, Nutrtion, FSL, WASH and RRM Programs, gather lessons learned, and build upon strength and improve on weaknesses.
  • In collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team leads regular monitoring and evaluation as required to ensure quality gender programming and adherence to donor’s deliverables and program management policies.
  • Monitor the external contexts and emerging needs regarding gender work to introduce programmatic changes as necessary.
  • Contribute to documenting gender mainstreaming experiences, preparing gender specific reports, presentations, briefs and articles for publication
  • Leads the development of gender specific progress reports.

Mission 4:  Local representation for ACF and coordination with other stakeholders within the intervention area
Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Action Against Hunger Project Managers, Deputy Manager, M&E Manager, MHPSS and support team to advance gender equality and equity issues throughout the project cycle.
  • Represent ACF in established gender focused networks and conferences related to gender.
  • Establish and strengthens gender focused technical partnerships together with MHPSS-P HOD.
  • Develop joint activity plans with technical teams and allies to further gender objectives and gender results of the social protection programme.
  • Advice on the development of communication and information programmes to raise gender awareness within base Programme.

Additional Responsibilities:

Position Requirements

  • Degree in Public Health, Psychology, Social Sciences, Gender Studies, or related field.
  • 2–3 years’ experience designing and managing gender and protection programmes, including in displacement contexts.
  • Strong knowledge of protection principles, gender mainstreaming, women’s rights, early recovery, and resilience.
  • Proven ability to work with local partners, community mediators, and government institutions.
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, problem‑solving, and innovation skills.
  • Experience delivering trainings and building capacity on gender issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure with resilience, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic, and communication skills, with good computer skills (MS Office, Outlook).
