Job Title: Consultant Cardiologist
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Consultant Cardiologist will be responsible for providing expert care to patients with a wide range of cardiovascular conditions.
The role is critical in both inpatient and outpatient settings and is responsible for conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests and developing personalized treatment plans that may include medication management, lifestyle modifications, and interventional procedures.
The Consultant Cardiologist will also lead multidisciplinary team meetings (including cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, intensivist & anaesthetist) to discuss and optimize care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions, ensuring that all treatment decisions are evidence-based and patient-centred.
Beyond clinical duties, the Consultant will be engaged in the strategic development of cardiology services within the hospital, contributing to the adoption of modern technologies, clinical trials, and innovative treatment protocols to enhance patient outcomes.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Practice & Leadership:
Conduct comprehensive cardiovascular assessments and evaluate diagnostic test results.
Manage patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases.
Approve patient discharge plans, follow-ups, and medical reporting.
Provide leadership and mentorship within the cardiology department.
Discuss diagnoses, procedures, risks, and expected outcomes with patients and families.
Strategic Development:
Participate in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives.
Review and update departmental policies in line with current best practices.
Contribute to the strategic planning of cardiology services and new care pathways.
Support the introduction of innovative technologies and techniques.
Governance & Quality Assurance:
Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and clinical governance frameworks.
Monitor resource utilization and contribute to clinical audit activities.
Administrative & Operational Duties:
Maintain accurate clinical records and prepare departmental performance reports.
Support coordination of clinic operations and patient logistics.
Participate in hospital-wide planning and decision-making.
Training and Education:
Mentor junior medical staff, residents, and fellows.
Facilitate training in diagnostic and management approaches in cardiology.
Create mentorship pathways for emerging leaders.
Participate in interprofessional education programs.
Research and Development:
Lead or support research initiatives in cardiovascular medicine.
Present research at conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
Organisational Responsibilities:
Contribute to the expansion of cardiology services and institutional growth
Collaborate across departments including surgery, radiology, nursing, and administration.
Participate in the evaluation and adoption of new systems or technologies.
Represent the cardiology department in community outreach and health promotion efforts.
Qualifications
Medical Degree (MBBCh, MD) from a recognized medical school.
Fellowship or Residency in Cardiology from a reputable institution.
Possession of a valid medical license.
Board certification in Cardiology is desirable.
Experience with advanced imaging or diagnostic technologies.
Experience in electrophysiology or interventional cardiology is an added advantage.
Experience:
5–7 years of post-consultant experience in a hospital cardiology setting.
Broad clinical experience in managing cardiovascular diseases.
Completion of a fellowship in Cardiology from an accredited institution.
Advanced diagnostic and therapeutic skills in general and subspecialty cardiology (e.g., coronary interventions, electrophysiology, structural heart disease, advanced imaging).
Proficiency in invasive and non-invasive procedures (e.g., angiography, echocardiography, pacemaker implantation, TAVI, cardiac MRI/CT).
Experience in multidisciplinary team collaboration (cardiac surgeons, radiologists, intensivists).
