Job Title: Non-Invasive Cardiologist
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Non-Invasive Cardiologist will provide expert diagnostic evaluation and comprehensive management of cardiovascular conditions using advanced non-invasive imaging and testing modalities.
This role involves leading the non-invasive cardiology service, interpreting diagnostic studies, managing outpatient and inpatient cardiology care, and contributing to the advancement of cardiovascular health through clinical excellence, education, and research at the African Medical Centre of Excellence.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Diagnostic Expertise:
Provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, and cardiomyopathies.
Perform and interpret non-invasive cardiac diagnostic tests including transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), stress echocardiography, and Doppler studies.
Oversee and interpret cardiac stress testing (exercise and pharmacological), ambulatory ECG monitoring (Holter, event monitors), and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
Manage cardiovascular risk factors and provide preventive cardiology counseling and treatment.
Imaging & Technology Leadership:
Lead the non-invasive cardiology imaging service, ensuring high-quality acquisition and interpretation of echocardiographic and other non-invasive studies.
Implement and maintain advanced imaging techniques including 3D echocardiography, strain imaging, and contrast-enhanced studies.
Collaborate with radiology and nuclear medicine departments for integrated cardiac imaging (CT coronary angiography, cardiac MRI, nuclear cardiology).
Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and quality assurance of non-invasive cardiology equipment.
Outpatient & Inpatient Management:
Conduct specialized cardiology outpatient clinics, providing consultation and follow-up care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions.
Manage cardiology inpatients in collaboration with the cardiology team, providing daily rounds and consultation services.
Develop and implement individualized treatment plans including pharmacological management, lifestyle modification, and device therapy coordination.
Provide pre-operative cardiovascular risk assessment and perioperative management for surgical patients.
Quality Assurance & Clinical Governance:
Ensure adherence to clinical guidelines, protocols, and best practices in non-invasive cardiology.
Lead quality improvement initiatives, peer review of echocardiographic studies, and clinical audits.
Maintain accreditation standards for the echocardiography laboratory and non-invasive testing services.
Implement and monitor key performance indicators for diagnostic accuracy, report turnaround times, and patient satisfaction.
Research & Academic Contribution:
Engage in clinical research projects focusing on non-invasive cardiology, imaging outcomes, and cardiovascular disease management.
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international cardiology conferences.
Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and participate in multicenter trials.
Stay current with advancements in non-invasive cardiology technology and evidence-based practices.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
Work closely with invasive cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac anaesthetists, and other specialists in a heart team approach to patient care.
Participate in cardiovascular multidisciplinary team meetings, case discussions, and treatment planning conferences.
Collaborate with primary care physicians and other referring specialists to ensure coordinated cardiovascular care.
Qualifications
Medical Degree (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
Fellowship in Cardiology from the West African College of Physicians (WACP), National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), or equivalent international board certification.
Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and a valid practicing license.
Additional certification or extensive experience in echocardiography and non-invasive cardiac imaging is required.
Subspecialty training in advanced cardiac imaging or preventive cardiology is advantageous.
Experience:
Minimum of 4-5 years’ post-fellowship experience in clinical cardiology with focused expertise in non-invasive cardiology.
Proven proficiency in performing and interpreting comprehensive echocardiographic studies (TTE, TEE, stress echo).
Experience in managing a busy cardiology outpatient service and inpatient consultation service.
Demonstrated teaching and supervisory experience with cardiology trainees and echocardiography technicians.
Strong record of clinical research, publications, or academic contributions in cardiology.
Excellent clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
