The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.
The Senior Registrar, Intensivist/ Anesthetist will provide advanced clinical care to critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICU) and deliver anesthetic services for a wide range of surgical and procedural interventions.
Operating under consultant supervision, this role involves leading clinical management in critical care, performing complex anesthetic procedures, supervising junior staff, and contributing to departmental education, quality improvement, and research activities at the African Medical Centre of Excellence.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Critical Care Management:
Provide comprehensive medical care to critically ill patients in medical, surgical, cardiac, and neurological intensive care units.
Manage complex conditions including multi-organ failure, sepsis, traumatic injuries, and post-operative complications.
Perform and interpret advanced hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, and invasive procedures such as central line placement, arterial line insertion, and intubation.
Lead daily ward rounds, formulate treatment plans, and coordinate with multidisciplinary ICU teams.
Anaesthetic Services:
Administer anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical specialties including general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, paediatrics, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic procedures.
Perform preoperative assessments, develop individualized anaesthetic plans, and manage intraoperative anaesthesia and analgesia.
Provide anaesthesia for non-operating room settings including radiology, endoscopy, and electroconvulsive therapy.
Manage postoperative pain and oversee patient recovery in post-anaesthesia care units (PACU).
Clinical Leadership & Supervision:
Supervise and mentor junior registrars, medical officers, house officers, and anaesthetic assistants in ICU and theatre settings.
Lead resuscitation efforts (e.g., cardiac arrest, trauma) and provide expert guidance in emergency situations.
Participate in on-call rosters for both ICU and anaesthetic emergencies.
Quality Improvement & Clinical Governance:
Participate in ICU and anaesthesia departmental audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and clinical incident reviews.
Implement evidence-based protocols and guidelines for critical care and perioperative medicine.
Contribute to patient safety initiatives, infection control measures, and risk management in high-acuity environments.
Research & Academic Contribution:
Engage in clinical research, audits, and quality improvement projects within critical care and anaesthesia.
Present cases and research findings at departmental meetings, conferences, and academic forums.
Maintain a clinical logbook and portfolio of professional development activities.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
Work closely with surgeons, physicians, radiologists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and nursing staff to deliver integrated patient care.
Participate in hospital committees related to critical care, perioperative medicine, transfusion, and antimicrobial stewardship.
Qualifications
Medical Degree (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and a valid practicing license.
Part II Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) or National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) in Anesthesia/Intensive Care, or equivalent progression in an accredited dual training program.
Experience:
Minimum of 4–5 years’ postgraduate clinical experience, with substantial training in both anesthesia and intensive care medicine.
Proven competence in managing critically ill patients, advanced airway management, invasive monitoring, and ventilator support.
Experience in administering anesthesia for a broad range of surgical procedures across different patient populations.
Demonstrated ability to lead clinical teams, supervise junior staff, and manage complex emergencies.
Strong clinical judgement, procedural skills, and effective communication abilities.
Commitment to teamwork, continuous learning, and high standards of patient safety.
