Job Title: Senior Registrar, Emergency Medicine
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Senior Registrar, Emergency Medicine will be responsible for delivering high-quality emergency care, managing a diverse range of acute illnesses and injuries, and ensuring smooth patient flow through the department.
The role involves leading clinical teams, optimizing operational efficiency, and upholding evidence-based practices.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Patient Management:
Perform rapid, accurate, and comprehensive assessments of patients presenting with undifferentiated emergency conditions.
Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., laboratory investigations, imaging studies, ECGs) to formulate differential diagnoses.
Administer emergency medications and perform life-saving procedures, including CPR, advanced airway management, defibrillation, and cardioversion.
Execute common emergency procedures such as wound care, suturing, fracture reduction, and lumbar puncture.
Stabilize critically ill patients and coordinate their transfer to ICU or specialized units.
Team Leadership & Supervision:
Supervise and mentor medical officers, resident doctors, and interns, providing hands-on training in emergency procedures.
Serve as shift lead, making key operational decisions in collaboration with the Consultant Emergency Physician and nursing team.
Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
Patient Flow & Operational Efficiency:
Optimize patient flow from triage to disposition, minimizing delays and overcrowding.
Coordinate with Radiology, ICU, Surgery, and Laboratory teams for efficient case management.
Participate in daily handovers, clinical rounds, and interdepartmental reviews.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
Communicate empathetically with patients and families, explaining diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognoses clearly.
Collaborate effectively with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and specialist physicians for coordinated care.
Address challenging patient or family interactions with professionalism and compassion.
Documentation & Compliance:
Maintain accurate, timely medical records, adhering to AMCE’s policies and legal requirements.
Utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system proficiently.
Ensure compliance with infection control protocols, clinical guidelines, and quality standards.
Quality Improvement & Research:
Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and peer reviews to enhance patient safety.
Contribute to research initiatives, case publications, and departmental policy development.
Educational Requirements, Skills and Competences
MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
Membership in Emergency Medicine (e.g., MWACEM, MRCEM, or equivalent).
Valid medical license to practice in Nigeria.
Certifications in Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
1- 4 years of post-fellowship experience in emergency medicine.
Proven expertise in high-acuity emergency care, trauma management, and procedural skills.
