Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist - Transplant
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Medical Laboratory Scientist – Transplant will play a vital role in supporting organ and tissue transplantation services within AMCE.
The role holder will be responsible for performing complex diagnostic and analytical procedures that ensure the accurate and timely delivery of laboratory results essential for donor-recipient compatibility and successful transplantation outcomes.
The position requires strong technical expertise, precision, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Perform and interpret routine and specialized transplant-related tests, including:
Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing
Crossmatch testing (flow cytometry and complement-dependent cytotoxicity)
Antibody screening and identification using solid-phase immunoassays
Post-transplant chimerism analysis:
Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory activities.
Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments to ensure optimal performance.
Donor–Recipient Compatibility Testing:
Conduct comprehensive compatibility testing to evaluate donor–recipient matches.
Analyse results to identify potential risks of rejection or adverse immune responses.
Prepare detailed reports and provide scientific consultation to transplant physicians.
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure compliance with international and national regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, ISO, CLSI).
Participate in internal and external proficiency testing programs to validate accuracy.
Maintain complete and accurate documentation of quality assurance processes, incidents, and corrective actions.
Data Management and Reporting:
Record and manage test results using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Prepare concise and timely reports to support clinical decision-making.
Assist with data analysis for quality improvement and research projects.
Training and Education:
Mentor and train junior staff, interns, and residents in transplant laboratory techniques.
Deliver continuing education sessions to ensure up-to-date knowledge of emerging methods and standards.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with transplant coordinators, surgeons, immunologists, and other multidisciplinary team members.
Participate in case reviews, providing laboratory insights that inform clinical decisions.
Liaise with external organizations, including organ procurement agencies, to support transplant processes.
Research and Development:
Contribute to research initiatives aimed at improving transplantation outcomes and laboratory methodologies.
Evaluate and validate new techniques and technologies for implementation in the laboratory.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, Pathology or any other related discipline.
Master’s degree in a related field is an added advantage.
Certification as a Technologist or Specialist in Microbiology or Medical Laboratory Science is an added advantage.
Familiarity with transplant-related complications (e.g., rejection, graft-versus-host disease).
Experience:
1–4 years of experience in a transplant or immunology-focused laboratory.
Hands-on expertise in molecular HLA typing, flow cytometry, and advanced immunological techniques.
Experience with next-generation sequencing is desirable.
In-depth knowledge of immunology, immunogenetics, and histocompatibility.
Strong understanding of HLA typing methodologies and interpretation.
Thorough knowledge of quality assurance and regulatory standards applicable to transplant laboratories.
