We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Consultant Anaesthetist
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Consultant Anaesthetist will provide expert clinical leadership and oversight for anaesthesia services across all surgical specialities at AMCE.
The role holder will ensure the highest standards of patient safety and care before, during, and after surgical procedures.
This includes administering anaesthesia, managing pain, and providing critical care support.
The role holder will also supervise junior medical staff, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, and drive innovation in perioperative medicine.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership and Anaesthesia Services:
Provide expert anaesthetic services for a wide range of surgical procedures, including general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynaecology, cardiothoracic, and paediatrics.
Perform pre-operative patient assessments to evaluate risks and determine appropriate anaesthetic plans.
Administer general, regional, and local anaesthesia and sedation, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout procedures.
Manage patients’ airway, pulmonary and cardiovascular status, and fluid balance during surgery.
Provide post-operative pain management and critical care support in the recovery room, ICU, and high-dependency units.
Quality Assurance and Patient Safety:
Implement and adhere to international clinical guidelines and protocols for anaesthesia and patient safety.
Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings and clinical audits to review outcomes and drive continuous improvement.
Ensure strict compliance with infection control and sterility protocols within the operating theatre environment.
Champion the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and other safety initiatives.
Innovation, Research and Development
Lead the adoption of new anaesthetic techniques, pharmacological agents, and monitoring technologies to enhance patient care.
Participate in and encourage departmental research, particularly in areas of perioperative medicine and pain management.
Contribute to AMCE’s knowledge-sharing culture through teaching, training, and presentation of clinical findings.
Leadership and Mentorship:
Provide clinical supervision, guidance, and training to Resident Doctors, Anaesthetic Officers, and other junior medical staff.
Foster a culture of learning, professionalism, and excellence within the anaesthesia and perioperative team.
Conduct performance reviews and support the professional development of team members.
Qualifications
Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
Fellowship or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesia.
Possession of a valid medical license.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years’ experience post-qualification in Anaesthesia, working in a busy tertiary hospital environment.
Proven expertise in providing anaesthesia for a broad range of surgical specialities, including managing high-risk patients.
Significant experience in regional anaesthesia techniques and advanced airway management.
Experience in clinical supervision, teaching, and mentoring junior staff.
Proficiency with modern anaesthetic delivery systems, monitors, and point-of-care ultrasound (echocardiography/ USG guided blocks) is highly desirable
