Job Title: Consultant Nephrologist
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Consultant Nephrologist will provide expert clinical leadership and comprehensive care for patients with kidney diseases and related conditions.
The role holder will be responsible for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of a wide range of renal disorders, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and electrolyte imbalances.
The role holder will also perform procedures, lead the nephrology service, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership and Patient Care:
Provide expert consultation, diagnosis, and management for inpatient and outpatient nephrology cases.
Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures, including kidney biopsies, and oversee renal replacement therapies.
Lead the care of patients on dialysis (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and manage associated complications.
Collaborate with intensivists, transplant surgeons, urologists, radiologists, and other specialists to support comprehensive patient management.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
Ensure all clinical practices adhere to international best practices, clinical guidelines, and hospital protocols.
Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes in nephrology services.
Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and timely medical records in compliance with regulatory standards.
Innovation, Research and Development:
Stay abreast of and implement advancements in nephrology care, treatment modalities, and technologies.
Participate in and encourage clinical research, audits, and publications to contribute to the field of nephrology.
Contribute to the hospital’s knowledge-sharing culture through teaching, training, and mentoring of junior medical staff and fellows.
Leadership and Mentorship:
Provide strategic clinical direction for the Nephrology service in alignment with the hospital’s mission and vision.
Supervise, mentor, and train medical officers, residents, and fellows in nephrology.
Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the team.
Strategic and Administrative Responsibilities:
Participate in the strategic planning and development of nephrology services, including dialysis and potential future transplant programs.
Collaborate with hospital leadership in the procurement of advanced medical equipment and resources for the nephrology unit.
Ensure effective and efficient use of clinical resources.
Qualifications
Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
Board certification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology (or equivalent international fellowship)
Possession of a valid medical license.
Postgraduate qualification in a relevant oncology subspecialty (desirable)
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a specialist in Nephrology post-certification.
Proven expertise in performing kidney biopsies and managing a full spectrum of renal diseases and dialysis patients.
Experience in a tertiary care or international hospital setting is highly desirable.
Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
