The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Biomedical Technician
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Biomedical Technician will play a vital role in ensuring the optimal performance, safety, and compliance of medical equipment across the Centre.
This includes installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of devices supporting cardiovascular, oncology, haematology, diagnostic, and surgical services.
The role holder will collaborate closely with clinical teams to ensure equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and provide technical support, thereby contributing to high-quality patient care and seamless medical operations.
The Biomedical Technician will also be engaged in quality assurance initiatives, regulatory compliance, and the training of staff in safe equipment usage.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Equipment Installation and Setup:
Install, configure, and calibrate medical devices (e.g., monitors, infusion pumps, imaging systems, surgical equipment) according to manufacturer specifications.
Conduct functional testing and verify equipment safety prior to clinical use.
Provide hands-on training and demonstrations for clinical staff.
Maintenance and Repairs:
Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules.
Diagnose technical faults and perform timely repairs or part replacements.
Document all service activities and ensure compliance with technical standards.
Compliance and Safety:
Ensure adherence to NAFDAC, SON, MDCN/MLSCN, and NNRA regulations, while aligning with global standards such as ISO 13485 and IEC.
Conduct equipment audits and risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards.
Support regulatory inspections and audits.
Operational Support:
Provide immediate technical support during clinical procedures involving complex devices.
Advise on equipment upgrades, replacements, or decommissioning.
Liaise with vendors and manufacturers for advanced servicing or spare parts.
Quality Assurance and Training:
Perform calibration and quality checks on medical devices.
Train and mentor staff on safe use and routine care of equipment.
Maintain records for accreditation and continuous quality improvement.
Qualifications
Diploma in Biomedical Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or related field.
Membership in relevant professional bodies (e.g., Association of Medical Engineers and Technologists) is an advantage.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of medical devices.
Experience within a hospital or specialized healthcare facility is highly desirable.
Experience:
Strong troubleshooting and repair skills for biomedical equipment.
Proficiency in diagnostic and calibration tools.
Knowledge of patient safety protocols and infection prevention.
Excellent communication skills for reporting and training.
Strong organizational skills for managing records and inventory.
Ability to interpret technical manuals and engineering diagrams.
