Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

Job Title: Chemical Pathology Clinician
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Chemical Pathology Clinician will be responsible for the analysis and interpretation of complex biochemical data from patient samples to diagnose, monitor, and manage disease.
This position requires a unique blend of clinical insight and laboratory expertise to support high-quality, patient-centered care.
The role holder will ensure the highest standards of quality, drive innovation in diagnostic methodologies, and provide key insights to clinicians across multiple specialties.
Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Clinical and Diagnostic Services:
Provide expert interpretation and reporting on biochemical analyses, including endocrine, metabolic, toxicology, and therapeutic drug | monitoring assays.
Ensure timely, accurate, and clinically relevant diagnostic reporting to support patient management decisions.
Offer direct clinical consultation to physicians, surgeons, endocrinologists, and other specialists on the selection, interpretation, and implications of biochemical tests.
Lead and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss complex patient cases.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
Implement and monitor the laboratory quality management system in line with international accreditation standards.
Ensure strict compliance with regulatory frameworks, ethical guidelines, and hospital safety protocols.
Oversee internal and external quality control (QC) and proficiency testing (PT) programs, investigating and resolving any variances.
Innovation, Research and Development:
Spearhead the evaluation, validation, and adoption of new biochemical assays, automated platforms, and diagnostic methodologies.
Participate in and encourage clinical research in areas such as biomarkers, metabolic disorders, and laboratory medicine.
Contribute to the hospital’s knowledge-sharing culture through teaching, training, and presenting at clinical conferences.
Operational and Administrative Responsibilities:
Provide professional oversight and guidance to biomedical scientists and laboratory technologists.
Collaborate with the laboratory management team in strategic planning, budgeting, and resource allocation for the section.
Assist in the procurement and implementation of advanced analytical instrumentation and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
Promote a patient-centered approach and uphold the hospital’s values of excellence, compassion, and integrity.
Qualifications
Medical Degree (MBBS, MD, or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
Board certification or equivalent in Chemical Pathology / Clinical Biochemistry.
Valid medical license
Fellowship or Postgraduate qualification in Chemical Pathology (e.g., FMCPath, FRCPath, or equivalent) is highly desirable.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years post-fellowship practice in Chemical Pathology.
Expertise in interpreting complex biochemical investigations and managing metabolic/endocrine disorders.
Proven leadership in laboratory services and quality management systems.
Experience in teaching, training, and clinical research.
Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and advanced laboratory technologies.
