Background

  • There is growing evidence that investing in health, nutrition, education, and protection of a society's most disadvantaged citizens by addressing inequity not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries.
  • Therefore, the focus on equity is vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.
  • In 2015, Northeast Nigeria Nutrition Sector was established following the recommendation by the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) to adopt the Sector approach. The Nutrition Sector is chaired by the State Primary Health Care Development Board (SPHCDB), and UNICEF is the Sector Lead Agency.
  • The overall objective of the Nutrition Sector response is to provide integrated preventive and curative services to mitigate a deterioration in the nutrition situation and support recovery for those already malnourished. UNICEF has scaled up a comprehensive nutrition programme in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states since 2017 in collaboration with government and partners.
  • Preventive, promotive, and curative nutrition services are designed based on local context to ensure availability and access to life-saving nutrition services in host communities, Garrison Towns, IDP camps and hard to reach areas through integration of nutrition services in functional health facilities, deployment of out-reach teams in IDP camps and mobile nutrition teams in hard-to-reach areas.
  • UNICEF has set up a nutrition surveillance system in Northeast Nigeria and co-chairs the assessment and information management technical working group (AIM TWG).
  • The IMO/DAE is responsible for leading and managing the collection, analysis, storage and sharing of information that is essential for UNICEF Nutrition Section and Northeast Nigeria Sector partners to make informed, evidence-based and strategic decisions.

Organizational Context and Purpose for the Job

  • Under the overall direction and guidance of the Nutrition Manager, the Information Management Officer (IMO, Data Analytics and Evidence) will provide leadership for the information management function of UNICEF Nutrition Section (Maiduguri Field Office) and Nutrition Sector.

Key Functions, Accountabilities, and Related Duties/Tasks
Under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Manager, the Information Management Officer (IMO, DAE) will support in designing, planning and monitoring of nutrition assessments per national and international guidelines:

Requirements
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:
Educational Qualification:

  • University Degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics or computer science/engineering or a related field with a nutrition focus.    

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in public health, nutrition, knowledge /data management or related field in the country, experience of working in a humanitarian context and UN agencies will be an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of, and working familiarity with, the programme and operating context in Northeast Nigeria is highly desirable.
  • Experience of nutrition data collection, with extensive experience, compiling and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data and producing relevant graphical presentations of analysed data is mandatory.
  • Proven experience in synthesizing relevant nutrition-related information and developing reports on time against set deadlines for the dissemination of key findings to technical and non-technical audiences is required.
