Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno State, MI is currently active in the WASH sector for improving the lives of both the IDP population as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. They include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. Job Title: WASH Assistant (Technical)

Location: Katsina

Job Description

• The WASH Assistant will assist the WASH Officer to in the supervision of all WASH-related constructions and rehabilitation, within the MI areas of interventions in Katsina State.
• With the directives of the WASH Officer, the WASH Assistant will provide technical support to the team and will be responsible for supervising vendors to ensure all rehabilitation works are done according to the agreed WASH standard.

Responsibilities

• Train, mentor, and provide on-the-job technical support to WASHCOMM volunteers and hygiene promoters on hygiene, sanitation, and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) best practices
• Coordinate and actively participate in Water, Satination and Hygiene (WASH) coordination meetings and relevant field-level engagements
• Supervise community mobilization, sensitization, and implementation of hygiene-related activities in line with approved work plans
• Liaise with community leaders and stakeholders to identify and address priority hygiene and sanitation challenges
• Support needs assessments, baseline surveys, and other monitoring activities in collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEAL) team
• Support hygiene and MHM kit distributions and ensure beneficiaries are properly sensitized on correct usage
• Ensure timely delivery of activities, accurate reporting (weekly/monthly), and close collaboration with the WASH Officer, including proposal development support

Qualification and Experience

• Minimum academic qualification of B.Eng in Civil and Water Resources, or related
• Extensive field team management experience as well as hygiene, security, safety, and resource management experience
• Excellent project management, partnership management, and coordination skills
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the capacity to see the big picture and make sound judgments and decisions
• Proactive, resourceful, solutions-oriented, and results-oriented, with a genuine interest in learning
• Strong communication skills, including proficiency in the local dialect (preferably Hausa and English), are a core criterion
• Ability to work effectively with local governments, align with MI values and standards, and cope in stressful or hostile environments, including travelling to deep field locations and conducting partner visits
• Qualified candidates currently based in Katsina or with Katsina State of Origin will be prioritized.
