We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: WASH Engineer

Location: Nguru and Damaturu, Yobe
Reporting to: Programme Manager
Proposed start date: March 2026

Job Description

  • We are currently looking to fill the role of WASH Engineer to lead and ensure the effective implementation of WASH technical activities under the GAC project, focusing on improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices, supporting the rehabilitation of community assets, and enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities in Yobe State

Key Responsibilities
Objective 1: Overall supervision of water and sanitation construction activities including preparing technical designs and bills of quantities

  • Support the governance and sustainable access to safe water by working with RUWASA, LGAs, and other stakeholders to implement WASH governance recommendations.
  • Together with partner, conduct technical assessments, prepare designs, and develop Bills of Quantities (BoQs) for water and sanitation facilities rehabilitation, upgrade and new construction. To visit sites and ensure quality assurance of construction being delivered and adherence to design specifications
  • To make sure that the technical activities are up to the ACF standards (WASH package)
  • Facilitate the selection, design and construction of sanitation and water systems. In water using ground water or surface water, including abstraction, storage, treatment and distribution for new systems or rehabilitation of existing systems.
  • In collaboration of partner, assess sanitation needs, and design and implement the most appropriate form of sanitation system, in consultation with male and female beneficiaries, which includes excreta disposal, refuse disposal, vector control and drainage that can contribute to sanitation ladder using available resources at affordable price that meet at least minimum standard. 
  • Consider different maintenance mechanisms, ensuring that they are appropriate to the local context and cultural norms and that facilities are sustainable
  • Regularly conduct water quality test/analysis from and inform result to WASH technical team for decision.
  • Coordinate the data collection in targeted aquifers and monitor water levels, temperature, and conductivity in collaboration with NIHSA.

Objective 2: Build the capacity of staff and partners including community engagement:

  • Prepare training tools on relevant technical topics and conduct trainings for both internal staff and external stakeholders
  • Development of technical guidelines and tools related to quality WASH intervention.
  • Assess areas for improvement and recording lessons learnt for future activities
  • Support the formation gender-sensitive WASH Committees (WASHCOMs) and artisan in target communities, ensuring female representation.
  • Building the capacity of consortium partners on water, sanitation and hygiene.
  • Train and build the capacity of WASHCOMs (WASH Committees), local artisans, Government stakeholders and partners on the construction and maintenance of WASH facilities.
  • Engage with communities to ensure their active participation in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of WASH activities.

Objective 3: Coordinate with internal staff and local stakeholders to ensure smooth project implementation:

  • Liaise closely with the Hygiene promotion officer throughout the planning, design and implementation stages of the WASH technical activities.
  • Together with san mark officer and logistic, support the identification and selection of TBOs using the SOPs and ACF guidelines.
  • Collaborate closely with the sanitation-marketing officer to integrate sustainable sanitation and hygiene practices into community and institutional settings, including the promotion of latrine construction, hygiene awareness campaigns, and waste management initiatives.
  • Ensure that effective communication and networking is developed and maintained through partnership and collaboration
  • Team with local Government and sectoral stakeholders/counterparts to exchange information on WASH technical implementation status
  • Build a data base of technical support projects and share with relevant stakeholders
  • In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, ensure each activity a sustainability plan is consider at the design stage and put to action.

Objective 4: Coordination and Reporting WASH activities:

  • Maintain effective communication with partners, local government and sectoral stakeholders, exchanging information on the status of WASH technical activities.
  • Prepare and submit regular technical reports, including progress updates, data/facility mapping, and quality assessments, using tools like MWater
  • Liaise with other team members to develop trainings , Monitoring and Evaluation reports
  • Prepare and share WASH section weekly, monthly and quarterly/annual progress reports to program manager.
  • Assist in development of weekly, biweekly and monthly activity report as directed by WASH program manager
  • Coordinate with logistics, HR, and finance teams regularly to ensure alignment with project goals and resource allocation.
  • Liaise with on-site construction supervision personnel on technical matters and provide technical reports to the Programme Manager as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Regularly engage with implementing partners to gather insights, provide technical feedback, and address challenges in WASH implementation.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of WASH practices by documenting lessons learned, sharing best practices, and participating in sectoral coordination meetings and workshops.
  • Ensure that all WASH activities comply with SPHERE minimum standards and other relevant guidelines, maintaining a strong focus on quality, safety, and sustainability.
  • Advocate for the integration of WASH services with other sectoral interventions, including health, education, and livelihoods, to maximize the impact and sustainability of the project.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree / HND in Civil Engineering, Water engineering, Geology, Building and other related fields
  • At least 3 years of progressive experience in supervising WASH-related construction activities, including the design and implementation of water and sanitation infrastructure.
  • Previous experience in supervising water and sanitation construction and rehabilitation activities
  • Experience working in the humanitarian sector, preferably with ACF
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with communities and government stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in changing environments.
  • Fluent in Hausa and English, with excellent report-writing and technical presentation skills.  Kanuri language ability is an advantage.
