Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, was established in April 1963 as the Advanced Teachers Training College by the defunct Eastern Nigeria Government with technical assistance from UNESCO. Its primary mandate was to train teachers in alignment with the Ashby Commission's report on Higher Education in Nigeria. In 1973, the institution was renamed Alvan Ikoku College of Education in honor of Mr. Alvan Ikoku, a prominent educationist and former President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Over the decades, the College expanded, awarding the National Certificate in Education (NCE), the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE), and, in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree. In 2023, the Federal Government upgraded the College to a full-fledged University of Education, making it a key institution dedicated to research, teaching, and training teachers for intermediate and higher education sectors.
