Egbin Power Plc. Lagos is one of the biggest additions to the electricity industry in Nigeria. Often seen as the biggest single generating power station in Sub-Saharan Africa, it was built to meet the every rising demand for electricity in Lagos and its environs.
Following the nation’s privatization exercise, Sahara, through its power division, Sahara Power Group and sundry affiliations, acquired the 1320 MW installed capacity Egbin Power Plant. We are working towards deploying a minimum of 5,000 MW of electricity generation over the next five years.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Reliability and Performance Engineer
Job Identification: 498 Location: Nigeria
Description
The Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Reliability and Performance Engineer is responsible for ensuring reliability, protection integrity, control system stability, and performance optimisation of all electrical, control, and instrumentation systems within the steam power plant.
The role provides technical oversight of protection systems, relay coordination, Distributed Control System (DCS) reliability, instrumentation accuracy, and electrical risk exposure. It supports outage planning, incident analysis, predictive maintenance analytics, and plant performance optimisation initiatives.
The position ensures that electrical and control-related failures, nuisance trips, and performance inefficiencies are proactively identified, analysed, and mitigated to improve plant availability, heat rate efficiency, and operational stability.
This role combines technical depth in EC&I systems with data-driven reliability and performance monitoring to ensure risk-informed engineering decisions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Electrical Protection and System Integrity:
Validate protection system settings, relay coordination studies, and fault level calculations.
Review and approve protection schemes for generators, transformers, switchgear, and balance-of-plant systems.
Investigate electrical protection-related trips and recommend corrective actions.
Ensure compliance with grid code and internal protection standards.
Control System and Instrumentation Reliability:
Analyse DCS, PLC, and control system-related trips and system disturbances.
Monitor DCS health indicators, redundancy performance, and communication stability.
Validate calibration integrity and accuracy of critical instrumentation.
Identify control logic vulnerabilities and recommend system improvements.
Reliability & Outage Risk Support:
Support electrical and control risk assessments during planned outages.
Review return-to-service readiness from an EC&I reliability perspective.
Identify recurring failures and lead corrective reliability improvement initiatives.
Participate in root cause investigations for major EC&I incidents.
Plant Performance and Optimisation:
Lead monitoring of heat rate, auxiliary power consumption, and efficiency metrics from an EC&I standpoint.
Develop and track performance KPIs linked to electrical and control system reliability.
Identify performance losses attributable to instrumentation inaccuracies or control instability.
Recommend optimisation strategies to enhance plant efficiency and stability.
Predictive Maintenance and Asset Intelligence:
Support the implementation of predictive maintenance analytics for electrical and instrumentation systems.
Develop and maintain digital dashboards for EC&I reliability and performance reporting.
Analyse condition monitoring data to detect early signs of degradation.
Integrate asset intelligence into maintenance planning.
Reporting and Continuous Improvement:
Prepare periodic reliability and performance reports for management review.
Provide technical recommendations to reduce forced outages and nuisance trips.
Support continuous improvement initiatives aligned with plant reliability objectives.
Education and Work Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering or Electro-Mechatronics Engineering or any related engineering disciplines, or relevant experience to back up any engineering degrees.
7 – 10 years’ experience in Power Utilities, Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production, or any asset-intensive industry; three of which would have been spent in providing independent assurance over technical control effectiveness and supporting plant reliability, asset integrity, operational resilience, and regulatory compliance.
