Job Ref ID: 2026-7746
Locations: Abuja, Abakaliki - Ebonyi and Birnin - Kebbi - Kebbi
Category: International Positions

Overview

  • Nigeria is grappling with a severe nutrition crisis. The Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS 2024) reports that 40% of children under five are stunted, 8% are wasted, and 27% are underweight. Micronutrient deficiencies remain widespread, with more than half of women of reproductive age suffering from anaemia, alongside persistent vitamin A and iron deficiencies.
  • These challenges are compounded by high maternal and child mortality rates, with 512 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (NDHS 2018), 110 under-five deaths per 1,000 live births, and 41 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births (NDHS 2024). Many of these deaths are linked to preventable conditions such as sepsis, intrapartum complications, and pneumonia.
  • A critical factor contributing to these poor outcomes is the limited capacity of frontline health workers to effectively identify, detect, and manage malnutrition cases especially among children 6-59months. Inadequate training, insufficient integration of nutrition services into routine care, and weak referral systems mean that many cases of acute malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies go undiagnosed or are poorly managed. This gap in capacity directly undermines efforts to reduce malnutrition and prevent avoidable deaths among women and children.
  • In response, the Momentum Country and Global Leadership Integrated Health (MCGL-IHP), Reaching Impact Saturation and Epidemic Control (RISE-IHP) project, supported by the United States and implemented in partnership with Jhpiego, is working in the FCT, Kebbi & Ebonyi will be working in 184 health facilities in FCT, Kebbi and Ebonyi States.
  • The initiative focuses on strengthening the skills of health workers to integrate and deliver essential life-saving nutrition interventions including the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) and Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN).
  • By addressing these capacity gaps through targeted training and a multi-sectoral, systems-based approach, the project aims to improve service delivery, enhance health outcomes, and contribute to Nigeria’s national goal of reducing malnutrition and mortality among women and children.
