Position Summary
The farm is starting with goat production, with a focus on breeding, fattening, and sustainable herd management, with plans to expand into additional livestock enterprises as the farm grows.
We are currently seeking a young, dedicated Veterinary Doctor / Animal Scientist with practical livestock experience, particularly in goat production, to lead and manage the daily operations of the farm.
The Farm Manager will be responsible for the overall health management, livestock supervision, and operational coordination of the farm.
The successful candidate will ensure proper animal welfare, herd productivity, and efficient farm operations while implementing best practices in animal health, feeding, biosecurity, and farm management.
The role requires living on the farm premises to ensure effective supervision of livestock, farm staff, and daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
Animal Health & Veterinary Care:
Monitor and maintain the overall health and welfare of all livestock on the farm.
Diagnose and treat animal diseases and health conditions.
Develop and implement preventive healthcare programs, including vaccination, deworming, and parasite control.
Maintain accurate animal health records and treatment logs.
Conduct routine health assessments for livestock.
Livestock Management (Goat Production):
Manage breeding programs including heat detection, mating supervision, kidding management, and kid care.
Monitor herd productivity, growth performance, and mortality rates.
Ensure proper care for pregnant does, newborn kids, and breeding stock.
Implement appropriate housing and environmental management systems.
Feeding & Nutrition Management:
Develop and supervise feeding programs suitable for different categories of animals.
Monitor feed quality and ensure animals receive balanced nutrition for growth and reproduction.
Support the farm’s strategy of developing alternative feeding systems to reduce dependence on commercial feed.
Farm Operations & Staff Supervision:
Supervise farm workers and coordinate daily farm activities.
Ensure proper execution of tasks such as:
Feed farming
feeding
cleaning of animal housing
health monitoring
facility maintenance
Train farm staff on animal handling, hygiene, and safety procedures.
Biosecurity & Farm Hygiene:
Develop and enforce strict biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks.
Maintain high standards of farm hygiene and sanitation.
Control movement of animals, visitors, and farm materials to reduce disease risks.
Farm Records & Reporting:
Maintain proper farm records including:
breeding records
treatment and vaccination records
mortality records
livestock inventory
Provide periodic reports to farm management on animal health, herd performance, and farm operations.
Farm Development & Expansion:
Work closely with management in developing and improving the farm systems.
Support future expansion plans as the farm grows into additional livestock production systems beyond goats.
Contribute ideas and recommendations for improving productivity and operational efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), degree in Animal Science or equivalent qualification.
Experience in livestock production, particularly goats or small ruminants.
Strong knowledge of animal health management, breeding, and farm systems.
Ability to live and work full-time on the farm premises.
Strong leadership and staff supervision ability.
