The company operates an integrated oil palm project in Cross River State, Nigeria, covering over 34,000 hectares of plantations and a state-of-the-art palm oil mill. We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Gardener / Horticulturist

Locations: Calaro Palm Oil Mill, Calaro Estate, Mbarakom, and Akamkpa - Cross River
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

• The Gardener/Horticulturist is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the landscape, green areas, and nursery operations within the palm oil mill environment.
• The role involves cultivating plants, managing soil health, supporting oil palm seedlings (where applicable), and ensuring that the facility’s surroundings are clean, safe, and environmentally sustainable.

Key Responsibilities
Landscape & Grounds Maintenance:

• Maintain lawns, gardens, and green areas within the mill premises
• Mow grass, trim hedges, and prune trees regularly
• Control weeds and ensure neat surroundings across operational zones
• Maintain drainage channels to prevent waterlogging.

Nursery & Plant Care:

• Support oil palm nursery operations (seedling preparation and transplanting)
• Water plants and monitor irrigation systems
• Apply fertilizers and soil conditioners appropriately
• Monitor plant health and identify signs of disease or pest infestation.

Pest & Disease Control:

• Apply pesticides and herbicides safely and according to guidelines
• Implement integrated pest management practices
• Report on unusual plant diseases affecting palms or surrounding vegetation.

Environmental Management:

• Assisting erosion control and soil conservation efforts
• Maintain buffer vegetation around mill waste areas
• Support sustainability and environmental compliance initiatives.

Equipment Handling:

• Operate and maintain gardening tools and machinery (mowers, trimmers, etc.)
• Ensure proper storage and safe use of tools and chemicals.

General Duties:

• Maintain cleanliness and aesthetics of the mill environment
• Assist with landscaping projects and site beautification
• Follow all health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

• Cleanliness and appearance of mill surroundings
• Health and survival rate of plants/seedlings
• Effective weed and pest control
• Compliance with environmental and safety standards.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education:

• Minimum: Secondary School Certificate
• Preferred: Diploma or Certificate in Horticulture, Agriculture, or related fields.

Experience:

• 1 - 3 years’ experience in gardening, landscaping, or plantation work
• Experience in oil palm plantations or agro-industrial environments is an advantage.

Skills & Competencies:

• Knowledge of plant care, soil management, and irrigation
• Basic understanding of oil palm nursery practices
• Ability to identify pests and plant diseases
• Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Attention to detail and cleanliness
• Ability to follow safety procedures
• Teamwork and reliability.

Working Conditions:

• Outdoor and industrial environment (exposure to heat, rain, and machinery)
• May involve lifting, bending, and prolonged standing
• Use of protective equipment when handling chemicals.

Reporting Line:

• Reports to: SeniorMill Manager / Environment Supervisor.

Salary
N96,670 - N120,000 monthly.
