Job Title: Senior Building Engineer
Location: Nigeria
Employment Type: Full-time
Industry: Oil & Gas
Job Summary
WTS Energy is seeking a Senior Building Engineer to join their team supporting a major LNG train project in Nigeria.
This role is within the oil and gas sector, focusing on industrial building design and construction support for large-scale energy infrastructure.
The Senior Building Engineer will independently manage building design validation, material and vendor engineering, field design changes, and multi-disciplinary coordination to ensure design consistency and constructability.
The position requires leading technical discussions with clients, resolving site issues promptly, and integrating drawings with 3D models to prevent construction conflicts.
Candidates can expect a dynamic work environment with opportunities to influence critical project milestones and collaborate across diverse engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities
Lead the design, review, and validation of building structural systems, layouts, and associated disciplines including waterproofing, roofing, finishing works, and building services integration such as electrical, instrumentation, plumbing, and HVAC.
Independently manage the full project cycle from design through construction support to close-out, ensuring compliance with international codes and project specifications.
Conduct thorough review and approval of Material Approval Requests (MAR), evaluating vendor technical documents and datasheets for compliance and initiating corrective actions when necessary.
Oversee and manage Field Design Changes (FDC), providing engineering judgment on constructability, proposing alternative design solutions, and ensuring changes are technically sound, cost-effective, and aligned with project standards.
Act as the primary technical coordinator for building-related multi-disciplinary interfaces, resolving design conflicts and ensuring consistency across electrical, instrumentation, HVAC, piping, and civil works disciplines.
Lead technical discussions and negotiations with the Client, effectively defending design decisions, addressing comments, and proposing practical alternatives to achieve design closure.
Review and ensure consistency between Approved for Construction (AFC) drawings, 3D models, and site conditions to identify and resolve mismatches prior to construction.
Provide prompt and reliable construction support by addressing site queries, construction deviations, and delivering sound engineering decisions under pressure.
Demonstrate strong ownership and accountability, maintaining clear and firm communication with contractors, subcontractors, the Client, and internal teams to drive project milestones and deliverables.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Architectural or Building Engineering
10–15 years of proven experience in industrial building design, preferably within Oil & Gas or LNG projects
Demonstrated expertise across the full project cycle: Design, Construction Support, and Close-out phases
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data handling and engineering tracking, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint for technical reporting and presentations, and AutoCAD for drawing review and mark-up
Experience with 3D model review software such as PDMS, E3D, or SP3D
Strong working knowledge of international codes and standards including ASCE, ACI, BS, and Eurocode
Fluent English communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly
Proven ability to independently manage building design and engineering tasks, including structural system validation, waterproofing, roofing, finishing works, and integration of building services (electrical, instrumentation, plumbing, HVAC)
Expertise in reinforced concrete and steel structural configurations, foundation systems, and multi-disciplinary interface management
Skilled in identifying design inconsistencies, interference issues, and associated risks, with the ability to interpret and apply project specifications and international codes to practical design and site conditions
Experience in material and vendor engineering, including review and approval of Material Approval Requests (MAR), evaluation of vendor technical documents, and ensuring compliance with project specifications
Competence in managing field design changes, providing engineering judgment on constructability, and delivering technically sound, cost-effective design solutions
Strong multi-disciplinary coordination skills to manage complex interface issues and ensure design consistency across electrical, instrumentation, HVAC, piping, and civil works
Ability to lead technical discussions with clients, defend design decisions, negotiate effectively, and propose practical alternatives
Capability to review and ensure consistency between Approved for Construction (AFC) drawings, 3D models, and site conditions
Experience providing construction support and resolving site queries and deviations under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working on brownfield projects with site constraints
Deep understanding of constructability principles and temporary versus permanent solution strategies
Familiarity with code-based design justification and deviation handling processes (Technical Queries, Deviations, Letters)
Knowledge of lifting, installation constraints, and equipment interface considerations
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exhibiting strong ownership and accountability
