Job Title: Catherterization Laboratory Nurse
Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Job Summary
The Catheterization Laboratory Nurse provides direct care to patients undergoing cardiac catheterization procedures.
This role performs a variety of tasks to ensure patient safety and comfort, including patient assessment and monitoring, pre-procedure preparation, post-procedure care, and the administration of medications.
Prepare patients for cardiac catheterization procedures by conducting pre-procedure assessments, confirming consent, and providing patient education.
Ensure procedure rooms are properly equipped with sterile instruments, surgical supplies, and functioning monitoring equipment.
Assist cardiologists and interventional specialists during diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.
Administer medications and monitor patient responses in accordance with clinical protocols.
Patient Monitoring & Clinical Care:
Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures, including vital signs, ECG rhythms, and hemodynamic parameters.
Identify early signs of patient deterioration and initiate appropriate nursing interventions within the scope of practice.
Perform post-procedural care, including site assessment, sheath removal, bleeding control, and patient stabilization.
Provide clear post-procedure care instructions and education to patients and their families.
Quality Control & Clinical Compliance:
Adhere strictly to nursing standards, cardiac catheterization protocols, infection control procedures, and hospital policies.
Ensure all Cath Lab equipment, medications, and sterile supplies are functional, calibrated, and within valid expiry dates.
Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and adherence to accreditation standards.
Ensure accurate adherence to medication safety and sterile procedure standards.
Safety Management:
Maintain strict infection prevention and control practices within the Cath Lab environment.
Ensure safe handling and operation of monitoring equipment, imaging devices, and medical devices.
Identify potential clinical or operational risks and report hazards promptly to the Unit Manager.
Take appropriate action in emergency situations occurring within the Cath Lab environment.
Communication & Multidisciplinary Coordination:
Collaborate effectively with cardiologists, anesthetists, radiographers, and other clinical staff during procedures.
Provide clear and structured clinical handovers to recovery units or inpatient wards.
Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding procedures, risks, and recovery expectations.
Maintain professional and respectful communication within the multidisciplinary care team.
Documentation & Reporting:
Accurately document patient assessments, procedures, medications administered, and clinical outcomes.
Complete Cath Lab procedure records, nursing notes, and incident reports within required timelines.
Maintain compliance with hospital documentation standards and legal healthcare requirements.
Ensure essential patient information is recorded and communicated to relevant care teams.
Risk Awareness & Management:
Assess and mitigate risks associated with invasive cardiac procedures and patient monitoring.
Ensure all medical devices are used safely and maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions and hospital policies.
Participate in adverse event reporting and quality assurance reviews.
Maintain valid nursing licenses, certifications, and required clinical competencies.
Professional Development & Continuous Improvement:
Participate in training, clinical education, and professional development activities related to cardiac care and Cath Lab procedures.
Contribute to knowledge sharing, mentoring junior staff, and supporting clinical learning environments.
Demonstrate initiative in identifying opportunities to improve patient safety, workflow efficiency, and procedural outcomes.

Requirements
Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience in a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Interventional Radiology, or Cardiology unit
Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license from the relevant Nursing and Midwifery regulatory body.
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required. (Additional certifications, such as cardiac care or critical care nursing, are an advantage).
Strong knowledge of cardiac catheterization procedures, interventional cardiology protocols, and hemodynamic monitoring.
Proficiency in patient preparation, intra-procedural monitoring, and post-procedure recovery care in the Cath Lab environment.
Knowledge of cardiac pharmacology, anticoagulation therapy, and medications used during interventional procedures.
Ability to operate and assist with Cath Lab equipment, including ECG monitoring systems, hemodynamic monitoring systems, and imaging support equipment.
Strong teamwork and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary cardiac care team, including cardiologists, radiographers, anesthetists, and nursing staff.
Familiarity with infection prevention protocols, patient safety standards, and regulatory requirements governing cardiac catheterization procedures.
