The Mechanical Plant Technician is accountable for delivering high-quality preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on all reciprocating gas engines and associated mechanical balance-of-plant (BoP) systems.
The role focuses on maximizing engine reliability, extending component service life, and ensuring all mechanical systems operate within OEM-specified parameters throughout their service intervals.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Plan and execute preventive maintenance (PM) activities on reciprocating engines, turbochargers, fuel injection systems, cooling circuits, lube oil systems, and compressed air systems per OEM-approved schedules and CMMS work orders.
Diagnose and repair mechanical failures across engines and rotating equipment (pumps, fans, compressors, heat exchangers) using structured fault-finding methodologies.
Perform precision mechanical work including engine timing verification and adjustment, cylinder head removal/overhaul, piston and liner inspection/replacement, turbocharger overhaul, and bearing replacement.
Conduct and document condition monitoring activities: vibration analysis checks, borescope inspections, lube oil sample collection for laboratory analysis, and performance trend evaluation.
Maintain and service all lubrication, cooling, and fuel supply systems, ensuring correct fluid specifications, pressures, flows, and temperatures are consistently achieved.
Complete accurate and timely CMMS work orders, maintenance reports, equipment history records, and inspection reports following all maintenance activities.
Support major planned outage and overhaul events (12k / 24k / 48k hour intervals), coordinating precision work sequences, tool management, and adherence to outage schedules.
Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for mechanical failures, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to eliminate repeat failures.
Enforce full compliance with PTW, LOTO, manual handling, and all plant HSE requirements during mechanical work.
Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to junior technicians and helpers.
Academic & Professional Qualifications
Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on maintenance experience on heavy-duty reciprocating engines in HFO, diesel, or gas power generation.
Demonstrable competency in engine timing, turbocharger overhauls, precision measurement (bore gauges, dial indicators, feeler gauges, torque wrenches), and borescope inspection.
Working knowledge of tribology, lubrication system management, and oil analysis interpretation.
Proficiency in CMMS platforms (SAP PM, Maximo, or equivalent) for work order management and equipment history maintenance.
OEM-accredited training certificates for relevant engine platforms (e.g., MAN, Wärtsilä, Caterpillar, Jenbacher) are a significant advantage.
Certified in HSE requirements: PTW, LOTO, manual handling, and working at height.
Core Competency Profile:
Mechanical Aptitude & Dexterity: Precise manual skills for high-tolerance mechanical work on complex engine assemblies.
Structured Fault Diagnosis: Systematic, evidence-based approach to identifying root cause of mechanical failures.
Documentation & Technical Writing: Clear, accurate, and complete maintenance records; ability to write quality RCA reports.
HSE Discipline:Non-negotiable adherence to PTW, LOTO, and manual handling standards during all tasks.
Time Management:Effective self-Organisation to execute multiple work orders on schedule without compromising quality.
Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying current with OEM technical bulletins, service letters, and new techniques.
