Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist (Head of Laboratory)

Summary

• We are seeking an experienced and licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist to lead our Laboratory Department.
• As Head of Laboratory, you will oversee daily operations, ensure accurate and timely diagnostics, maintain quality and compliance standards, and support clinical decision-making across the hospital.

Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations & Management:

• Oversee all laboratory sections: Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Serology, Blood Bank, and Histopathology.
• Plan work schedules, assign duties, and ensure adequate staffing for 24/7 coverage where applicable.
• Ensure equipment is maintained, calibrated, and validated for accurate results.
• Manage reagent and consumable inventory to prevent stockouts and minimize waste.

Quality Assurance & Compliance:

• Implement and monitor the laboratory Quality Management System in line with ISO 15189, MDCN, MLSCN, and NAFDAC standards.
• Conduct internal audits, proficiency testing, and corrective/preventive actions.
• Ensure proper documentation, record keeping, and data integrity in the LIS/HMIS.

Technical & Clinical Support:

• Perform and supervise complex analyses, validate results, and authorize the release of reports.
• Provide technical advice to clinicians on test selection, interpretation, and turnaround time.
• Troubleshoot assay and equipment issues and escalate when required.

Staff Supervision & Development:

• Supervise, train, and appraise medical laboratory scientists, technicians, and assistants.
• Organize in-house training and CPD sessions to keep staff updated on new methods and regulations.

Safety & Administration:

• Enforce biosafety, infection control, and waste disposal protocols.
• Prepare budgets, procurement requests, and performance reports for management.
• Liaise with external partners, vendors, and regulatory bodies.

Requirements

• Education: BMLS / MMLS Degree in Medical Laboratory Science from a recognized institution.
• Licensure: Current license and practicing certificate from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
• Experience: Minimum of 5 years post-NYSC experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory/managerial role in a hospital setting.
• Skills: Strong knowledge of laboratory methods, QA/QC, LIS, and regulatory compliance. Proficient in MS Office and data analysis.
• Attributes: Detail-oriented, leadership ability, strong communication, high integrity, and ability to work under pressure.
