Job Purpose
The Consultant Neurologist will be responsible for providing expert diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with neurological disorders.
This role is critical for delivering high-quality neurological care, including the management of stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, and neuroinfections.
The role holder will lead neurology services, conduct inpatient and outpatient consultations, perform and interpret neurodiagnostic studies, and contribute to teaching, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
He/ She will demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
Conduct comprehensive neurological assessments, including detailed history taking and physical examination.
Diagnose and manage a wide range of neurological conditions, including stroke, epilepsy, headache disorders, dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, neuropathies, and CNS infections.
Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
Provide acute stroke management, including thrombolysis and coordination with interventional radiology.
Manage neurological emergencies such as status epilepticus, acute neuromuscular respiratory failure, and raised intracranial pressure.
Neurodiagnostic Procedures & Interpretation:
Order, perform, and interpret neurodiagnostic studies, including EEG, nerve conduction studies (NCS), EMG, and evoked potentials.
Interpret neuroimaging studies (CT, MRI, MRA, MRV) in collaboration with radiologists.
Perform lumbar punctures for cerebrospinal fluid analysis in suspected meningitis, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions.
Leadership, Line Management & On-call Responsibilities:
Lead a team of junior doctors, neurology residents, and medical students during ward rounds and clinical activities.
Conduct performance evaluations for junior team members and ensure adherence to hospital policies.
Delegate responsibilities effectively and facilitate conflict resolution within the neurology team.
Participate in the on-call rota for after-hours, weekend, and public holiday neurology services.
Teaching & Mentorship:
Provide guidance, supervision, and structured training for resident doctors, interns, and medical students in neurology.
Conduct daily bedside teaching rounds, case presentations, and didactic lectures.
Supervise trainees in performing and interpreting neurodiagnostic procedures.
Foster a culture of learning, curiosity, and excellence within the neurology department.
Quality Improvement & Research:
Participate actively in departmental audits, morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings, and quality assurance processes.
Contribute to the development and revision of neurology protocols, clinical pathways, and SOPs.
Lead at least one quality improvement project annually aimed at improving neurological care outcomes.
Engage in clinical research projects, including clinical trials, and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
Collaboration, Communication & Documentation:
Collaborate closely with neurosurgeons, radiologists, psychiatrists, rehabilitation therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
Communicate effectively with patients and families, explaining diagnoses, treatment options, and prognoses with empathy and cultural sensitivity.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including stroke meetings, tumor boards, and neurorehabilitation conferences.
Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed medical records in the hospital's electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Contribute to the hospital's neurological registry or database for stroke and other neurological conditions.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution plus Board Certification in Neurology (e.g., FWACP, FMCNA, or equivalent international certification) and a valid medical license to practice in Nigeria (or eligibility to obtain one).
Minimum of 5 years of post-fellowship experience in a hospital setting, preferably with exposure to a high-volume neurology unit managing a broad range of neurological disorders.
Demonstrated expertise in performing and interpreting neurodiagnostic studies (EEG, EMG, NCS, evoked potentials) and neuroimaging (CT, MRI).
Strong knowledge of national and international guidelines for stroke, epilepsy, and other neurological conditions, with excellent problem-solving skills for complex presentations.
Excellent communication skills with cultural sensitivity and empathy, plus proven track record in quality improvement initiatives and clinical governance.
Postgraduate qualifications in neurophysiology, stroke medicine, neuropalliative care, or medical education is highly desirable. Experience in training junior staff and research with peer-reviewed publications are added advantages.
