Job Objective
The Junior Consultant, Haematology will provide specialist clinical care for patients with benign and malignant haematological disorders under the supervision of Consultant Haematology.
The role holder will support the safe delivery of blood products, assist in the management of transfusion-related cases, contribute to the clinical apheresis service, and promote evidence-based practice, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement across the haematology and transfusion medicine service.
Conduct daily ward rounds and outpatient consultations for patients with haematological disorders including leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, anaemias, coagulopathies, and transfusion-dependent conditions.
Assist in the management of complex cases such as massive haemorrhage, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), and patients with complex red cell antibodies under consultant supervision.
Perform and interpret bone marrow aspiration, trephine biopsy, and peripheral blood smear reviews.
Prescribe and monitor chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and anticoagulation according to evidence-based protocols.
Provide on-call coverage for haematology and transfusion medicine emergencies, including urgent apheresis and massive transfusion activation.
Document all clinical encounters comprehensively in the electronic medical record within 24 hours.
Transfusion Medicine & Blood Bank Support:
Authorise the issue of blood components (red cells, platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate) for routine and emergency requests in accordance with hospital transfusion guidelines.
Support the Consultant in investigating transfusion reactions and incidents, including completion of haemovigilance reports.
Assist in the daily management of the therapeutic apheresis service, including patient assessment, prescription, and procedural oversight.
Provide expert advice to clinicians on appropriate blood component selection, including irradiated, washed, or HLA-matched products.
Participate in AMCE’s Patient Blood Management (PBM) programme to optimise transfusion practice and reduce unnecessary transfusions.
Monitor inventory levels of rare blood groups and coordinate with the Blood Bank for timely replenishment.
Quality, Safety & Clinical Governance:
Participate actively in the Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC) and contribute to policy reviews and quality improvement projects.
Lead monthly morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings focused on haematology and transfusion-related adverse events.
Conduct regular clinical audits of transfusion appropriateness, documentation quality, and adherence to protocols.
Report all near-misses and adverse events through the hospital’s incident reporting system and support root cause analyses.
Ensure 100% compliance with national and international standards/ requirements.
Assist in preparation for accreditation visits and regulatory inspections of the haematology and transfusion services.
Education, Training & Mentorship:
Supervise and teach haematology residents, medical officers, and interns during ward rounds, laboratory sessions, and didactic lectures.
Deliver monthly continuing medical education (CME) sessions on topics such as transfusion reactions, apheresis indications, and PBM.
Train junior staff in practical procedures including bone marrow biopsy, apheresis access, and emergency blood issue protocols.
Develop simulation-based training scenarios for massive haemorrhage protocol activation and transfusion reaction management.
Assess and document competency of junior staff in specialised procedures and clinical decision-making.
Act as a clinical resource for nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals on haematology and transfusion practice.
Research & Academic Contribution:
Act as a sub-investigator or co-investigator in clinical trials and observational studies in haematology and transfusion medicine.
Lead at least one departmental audit or quality improvement project annually and present findings at hospital grand rounds.
Prepare case reports, case series, and original research manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
Assist the Consultant in securing internal or external research funding and grant applications.
Present abstracts at national and international conferences.
Maintain a personal portfolio of continuing professional development (CPD) with a minimum of 40 credits annually.
Interprofessional Collaboration & Communication:
Liaise daily with the Blood Bank, Laboratory, ICU, and surgical teams to coordinate complex transfusion and haematology care.
Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings for haematology-oncology, transplant, and high-risk obstetric cases.
Communicate clearly and empathetically with patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, transfusion risks, and consent.
Provide timely written and verbal updates to referring physicians and primary care teams.
Represent the haematology service on hospital-wide committees such as the Blood Transfusion Committee and Patient Safety Committee.
Escalate unresolved clinical or operational issues to the Consultant Haematology promptly.
Requirements
Education, Skills and Competencies:
Medical Degree (MBBS, MD, or equivalent) from a recognized institution, with valid medical licensure to practise.
Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in Haematology or Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCPath) in Haematology, or equivalent specialist qualification from a recognized international body (e.g., MRCP/MRCPath Haematology, American Board of Haematology).
Fellowship of Minimum 1-to-3-year post fellowship experience
Specialized training or certification in specific areas of Haematology (e.g., Blood Transfusion Medicine, Haemostasis & Thrombosis, Apheresis Technology, or Bone Marrow Transplantation) is highly desirable.
Demonstrated experience with core haematology procedures, including bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy, interpretation of complex haematological investigations (flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, coagulation assays), and management of both benign and malignant blood disorders.
Proven competence in transfusion medicine, including authorising blood component release, investigating transfusion reactions, supporting therapeutic apheresis procedures, and applying Patient Blood Management (PBM) principles under consultant supervision.
Ability to supervise, teach, and mentor a multidisciplinary clinical team including medical officers, residents, interns, and nursing staff, with skills in bedside teaching, performance feedback, and professional development support.
Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams (ICU, Surgery, Laboratory, Blood Bank), with empathy and clarity in explaining diagnoses, treatment plans, and transfusion risks to patients and families.
Experience in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based practice, with familiarity in incident reporting, protocol development, and a commitment to continuous professional development (minimum 40 CPD hours annually).
