Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist
Location: Egbeda, Lagos
Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing a wide range of advanced analytical techniques used in clinical diagnostics, including enzyme activity measurement, spectrophotometry, electrophoresis, immunoassays, and molecular separation methods.
The role involves determining the concentration of chemical constituents in patient samples such as blood, urine, and other bodily fluids.
The role combines both manual laboratory techniques requiring strong interpretive and practical skills, as well as the operation, maintenance, and oversight of highly automated laboratory systems to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable diagnostic results that support clinical decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Perform a broad range of laboratory investigations and interpret results to support clinicians in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Receive, label, store, and prepare patient specimens (including blood and other body fluids) for analysis in accordance with standard procedures.
Conduct laboratory tests and generate reliable, accurate, and precise data to support clinical and scientific outcomes.
Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as spectrophotometers, immuno-analyzers, centrifuges, titrators, pipettes, and pH meters.
Operate automated clinical chemistry systems and perform manual testing where required to deliver diagnostic results.
Detect and quantify drugs of abuse, therapeutic drug levels, and toxic substances using toxicology instrumentation and manual testing methods.
Perform analysis of blood and other specimens using both automated and manual laboratory techniques.
Conduct clinical validation by reviewing abnormal or flagged results and determining the need for additional testing or verification.
Ensure timely turnaround of test results in line with clinical requirements and laboratory standards.
Generate and prepare accurate laboratory reports and communicate relevant findings to clinicians regarding patient conditions.
Participate in diagnostic discussions and contribute to clinical interpretation and treatment planning where required.
Implement and adhere to internal and external quality control and quality assurance procedures to maintain testing accuracy.
Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date laboratory records and databases.
Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and functionality of all laboratory instruments and equipment.
Support data entry, result documentation, and laboratory information system updates.
Maintain compliance with laboratory safety, hygiene, and regulatory standards.
The Person (Requirements)
Minimum academic qualification of a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS).
2–4 years relevant post-qualification experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare setting.
Must be a registered member of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) with a valid practicing license.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and laboratory information systems.
Strong technical ability in operating, maintaining, and calibrating laboratory equipment.
Excellent hand-eye coordination and ability to work with precision laboratory instruments.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and commitment to quality standards.
