Job Title: Legal Officer
Location: NESCO (Nigeria) Limited’s Head Office, Bukuru, Jos South - Plateau
Purpose of the Job
Provide legal counsel and support to NESCO, ensuring effective management of legal and contractual matters to minimise litigation risks and maintain strict compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Legal Officer shall therefore be responsible, but not limited, for the following:
Provide sound and efficient legal advice to NESCO
Coordinate the preparation of contracts, deeds, leases, briefs and other legal documentation in compliance with legal requirements
Assess legal implications of all contracts or any other documentation to which NESCO has committed itself and report to Management
Provide advice and recommendations that ensures that company operations, procedures and policies are within relevant statutes and legislation in Nigeria
Recommend effective strategies for the management of legal issues and risks, taking into account legal, regulatory, financial and reputational factors
Liaise with relevant department heads to ensure that appropriate courses of action have been taken to mitigate identified legal risks
Engage external counsel and manage external relationships and costs to ensure NESCO is adequately protected from liability
Maintain an accurate and up-to-date database of all disputes and litigation agreements
Conduct regular environment scan to keep abreast pf the latest case-law and statutes/ amendments specific to the Power Sector
Assist to follow up and provide updates on court matters and attend court hearings for and on behalf of NESCO
Assist in the entire review and approval processes for all contracts in accordance with the process and the limits of authority policies
Monitor developments with respect to changes in government policies on Power Generation, power sale, rules & regulations of related policies and advice on implications
Assist in organization and administration of the legal department
Prepare periodic reports for the attention of the MD/CEO
Perform any other tasks as assigned from time to time by the MD/CEO
Requirements
Minimum Educational & Professional Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge:
Minimum of a First Degree in Law (L.L.B, B.L)
LLM (Master of Law) is an advantage
Professional certification, such as membership in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is required
Minimum of four (4) years post call-to-bar experience as a Legal Practitioner
Attributes and Competencies:
Knowledge of the legal aspects of the power sector and related sectors like Oil and Gas, and regulations governing the sector, particularly tariff regulations
Knowledge of, and experience with, laws dealing with government and/or commercial contract administration, particularly contract negotiation, preparation and administration
Knowledge of NESCO’s Business and industry
Ability to provide independent advice to senior-level management on highly technical matters
Demonstrated success in managing and conducting a variety of litigation matters
Ability to interpret and apply relevant laws, rules and regulations
Good business writing and documentation/ drafting skills
Keen attention to detail
Good negotiation skills and influencing skill
High ethical standards and integrity
