We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Accountant 

Location: Gwarinpa, Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Purpose

• ​The Accounting Officer will manage the day-to-day financial operations of Discovering Talents Academy.
• This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing student fee collections, processing payroll, and ensuring strict, timely compliance with all statutory tax regulations under the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).

​Key Responsibilities
Fee Management & Revenue Tracking:

• ​Oversee the billing, collection, and reconciliation of student tuition, registration, and vocational program fees (e.g., robotics, music, coding).
• ​Issue official receipts, track outstanding balances, and generate weekly reports on fee collections and defaults.
• ​Maintain a professional, polite, yet firm line of communication with parents regarding outstanding accounts.

​Expense & Accounts Payable Management:

• ​Verify and process vendor invoices, school utility payments, and daily operational expenses.
• ​Maintain the petty cash system, ensuring all disbursements are backed by approved receipts and vouchers.
• ​Reconcile all school bank accounts weekly to ensure zero discrepancies.

​Payroll Administration:

• ​Prepare monthly staff payroll, accounting for variations in attendance, bonuses, or deductions.
• ​Calculate and process statutory deductions, ensuring accurate payroll reporting in line with current federal regulations.

​Tax & Statutory Compliance:

• ​Prepare and file monthly VAT returns (0% zero-rated for education) via the NRS portal to maintain clean compliance records.
• ​Prepare annual Companies Income Tax (CIT) self-assessments and financial statements for filing.
• ​Manage remittances and filings for local authorities, ensuring the school avoids late fees or penalties.

​Financial Reporting & Budgeting:

• ​Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Income Statement, Cash Flow, and Balance Sheet).
• ​Assist management in preparing the annual school budget and monitoring term-by-term expenditure against budgetary caps.

​Key Requirements & Qualifications

• ​Education: B.Sc. or HND in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline.
• ​Experience: 2–3 years of active accounting experience. Experience working within a private school setting is highly preferred.
• ​Professional Alignment: Progress toward professional certifications (ICAN, ACCA) is an added advantage.

​Technical Skills:

• ​Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Wave, Sage) and advanced Excel skills.
• ​Hands-on familiarity with the NRS tax filing portals for corporate and consumption taxes.
• ​Solid understanding of the Nigerian tax landscape, specifically regarding exemptions and filings for educational institutions.

​Soft Skills:

• ​Exceptional attention to detail and zero tolerance for data entry errors.
• ​Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet strict legal and operational deadlines.
• ​Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with parents, vendors, and regulatory officers.
