Lagos State University (LASU) was established in 1983 by the Enabling Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, for the advancement of learning and establishment of academic excellence. The University, which took off with three (3) Faculties Law and Humanities, Education and Science has grown to become a citadel of repute with high standards. The University caters for a student population of over 85,000, with enrolment in full-time and part-time programmes at the Diploma, Undergraduate AND Postgraduate Levels.

A summary of LASU objectives is given as: to create opportunities for deserving candidates to further their education by providing programmes of studies that will give them not. only marketable skills but which will enable them develop their full potential and make them well-rounded scholars and useful members of the society. LASU is also to meet the specific manpower needs of Lagos State for the sustenance of her position as the commercial and industrial hub of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the strategic transformation of the industrial capacity of the State and the Nation, as well as undertake any other activities appropriate for a University of the highest standard.

Job Title: Vice Chancellor

Location: Ojo, Lagos

The Job
The Lagos State University Law 2004 (As amended) provides that the Vice-Chancellor shall:

  • Exercise general supervision over the University, in addition to other functions conferred or imposed on him by this Law or any other enactments subject to the approval of the Council.
  • Have a general responsibility to the Council for maintaining and promoting the efficiency and good order of the University.
  • Ensure that the provisions of the Law, Ordinances and Regulations are observed.
  • Be a member of Council;.
  • Be the Chairman of the University Senate, which is the highest decision making body for all academic matters (i.e. student admissions, examinations and graduation, establishment of new academic programmes etc.) in the University.
  • Be the Chairman of Congregation; and have responsibility for maintaining discipline in the University.

Responsibilities

  • The job demands a person who can fully harness financial resources in running the University and who is able to attract grants / endowments from financing bodies, especially international donor agencies.
  • The candidate should be able to cope adequately with varying needs of staff and students as well as emerging contemporary issues, especially those that are related to social life of students in an increasingly dynamic and urban University.
  • The Vice-Chancellor is a Principal Officer, as well as the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Academic Officer and Chief Image Maker of the University.
  • The Vice-Chancellor should have a deep understanding of the systems and operations. of a University as well as provide strategic vision and leadership to sustain Lagos State University as a foremost University in Nigeria.
  • The Vice-Chancellor will have to play a pivotal role in taking Lagos State University to global recognition.

The Candidate

  • It will be the duty of the Vice-Chancellor to maintain and improve upon the very high standard in all programmes of the University, such that accreditation granted to academic programmes is sustained.
  • The candidate must be a proven and successful manager of human and material resources. He / She must meet the criteria expected of a contemporary Vice-Chancellor in a 21st Century University. These criteria include, but not limited to the following:
    • Possession of PhD OR Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree and must have supervised PhD students
    • Full Professor of several years standing and must have delivered his / her professorial inaugural lecture
    • Minimum of fifteen (15) years continuous university teaching / research experience.
    • Proven record of visionary and transformational leadership in higher education administration. Strong commitment to solution-driven research with measurable societal and industrial impact.
    • Demonstrable capacity to attract local and international research grants, endowments, and development partnerships.
    • Have innovative revenue generation and sustainable income diversification beyond government subventions.
    • Must have deep understanding of global trends in university education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation
    • Have capacity to promote industrial harmony through inclusive leadership, dialogue, and conflict resolution.
    • Show strong commitment to staff development, welfare, motivation, and institutional capacity building.
    • Have a clear passion for students' welfare, mentorship, employability, and holistic development.
    • Show evidence of excellent national and international networks with academia, industry, government, alumni, and development agencies.
    • Demonstrate proven ability to establish strategic collaborations, exchange programmes, and institutional partnerships globally.
    • Show high level of integrity, transparency, accountability, and prudent financial management. Demonstrable competence in policy formulation, strategic planning, and effective institutional governance.
    • Demonstrate a strong advocacy for innovation, commercialisation of research outputs, and university-industry linkage.
    • Commitment to excellence in teaching. learning, accreditation, and quality assurance standards.
    • Ability to inspire unity, inclusiveness, diversity, and shared institutional vision among stakeholders.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and public engagement skills.
    • Capacity to leverage technology, artificial intelligence, and digital systems for efficient university administration.
    • Evidence of administrative experience and successful management of complex institutions or systems.
    • Commitment to community development, national relevance, and global competitiveness of the university.
    • Courage, resilience, and strategic thinking required to navigate contemporary challenges in tertiary education.
    • Must be in excellent physical and mental health, with verifiable certificates to that effect.

Age:

  • Must not be above sixty-five (65) years of age on assumption of duty as the 10th substantive Vice-Chancellor, if appointed.

Tenure: 

  • The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a Single Term of five (5) years only on such terms and conditions as may be specified in the letter of appointment.

Remenuration

  • The remuneration and other conditions of service are as applicable to the post of Vice-Chancellor in Nigerian Universities and as may be determined from time to time by the government / governing council, as appropriate.

  • University Teaching and Research, Experience, University Administrative, Managerial and Leadership Experience with dates.
  • Academic distinctions viz:
    • Grants, awards and scholarships.
    • PhD candidate supervision.
    • Recognition by national and international. professional bodies / fellowships.
    • Provision of researcher profiles and identifiers for verification.
  • Membership of Academic and Professional Bodies. Scholarly Publications (well referenced and listed in chronological order).
  • Vision for the University in the next five (5) years (not more than 5,000 words or a minimum of 1000 words).
  • Contribution to University and funds attracted through donations and endowments.
  • Names, addresses and phone numbers of three (3) referees who should be able to attest to the candidate's standing and abilities academically and managerially, as well as morals, character and integrity.
  • Each referee must be contacted by the applicant to forward, directly to the Registrar, a confidential report, in a properly sealed envelope marked "Reference / Post of Vice -Chancellor" at the top left hand corner of the envelope, to reach the Registrar on or before the deadline for submission of application.
